Quote:
When the available evidence in a murder case points to a young woman as the main suspect, her boyfriend, a police detective, arranges for a struggling songwriter who is playing piano in a bar to be blamed for the crime. The girl, knowing that neither she nor the piano player committed the murder, helps him to escape from the police dragnet and try to find the real killer.

Plot Synopsis by Hal Erickson
Also known as City on a Hunt, No Escape stars Lew Ayres and Marjorie Steele as mixed-up victims of circumstance. John Tracy (Ayres), a drunken songwriter, has reason to believe that he's murdered artist Peter Hayden (James Griffith). So does Pat Peterson (Steele), a blue-collar girl whom Hayden had tried to seduce. Both John and Pat take it on the lam, with her boyfriend, police detective Simon Shayne (Sonny Tufts), in hot pursuit. The twist ending isn't much of a surprise, but it's still crammed with suspense. No Escape represents a rare directorial effort by screenwriter Charles Bennett, whose previous scripting credits include several Alfred Hitchcock thrillers.

Edward D. Wood Jr. - Plan 9 from Outer Space [Colourised] (1959)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/89/Plan_nine_from_outer_space.jpg/220px-Plan_nine_from_outer_space.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Plan 9 From Outer Space (originally titled as Grave Robbers from Outer Space) is a 1959 science fiction/horror film written and directed by Edward D. Wood, Jr. The film features Gregory Walcott, Mona McKinnon, Tor Johnson and Maila "Vampira" Nurmi. The film bills Béla Lugosi posthumously as a star, although footage of the actor had been shot by Wood for another film just before Lugosi's death in 1956.

Plot: In San Fernando, California, two gravediggers are filling the grave of a deceased woman, the young wife of an old man. Suddenly they hear a strange noise and decide to leave the cemetery. As they turn to leave, the resurrected corpse of the old man's wife (played by Vampira) attacks and kills them. As one of them dies, a tombstone is knocked over, and the actors pick it up and put it back in place, despite their characters being dead. Meanwhile, in the skies nearby, a pilot named Jeff Trent (played by Gregory Walcott) and his co-pilot Danny encounter a flying saucer.
Absorbed in his grief over his wife's death, the old man (played by Béla Lugosi) walks out of his house and into the path of an oncoming automobile. At his funeral, two mourners discover the bodies of the gravediggers. Inspector Daniel Clay (played by Tor Johnson), along with several police officers, come to the cemetery to investigate. While searching the graveyard, Clay encounters the female zombie, who is now joined by the corpse of the old man. Clay is attacked and killed.
Jeff Trent is watching the cemetery with his wife, Paula, and tells her about his flying saucer encounter, stating that the Army has sworn him to secrecy about what he saw. He suspects that whatever is happening in the cemetery is related to his encounter with the UFO. Suddenly, a powerful wind knocks everyone to the ground, and a spaceship lands nearby.
In the weeks that follow, newspaper headlines report other flying saucer sightings. The military, under the command of Colonel Thomas Edwards, Chief of Saucer Operations, finally attacks the alien spaceships, which flee Earth. Edwards reveals that the government has been covering up the flying saucer visits to Earth, and wonders if the alien visits are connected to other disasters on Earth.
The aliens return to Space Station 7 for regeneration. Their commander, Eros, informs their Ruler that he has attempted, unsuccessfully, to contact the governments of Earth. He tells the Ruler that to force the people of Earth to acknowledge his people's existence, he is implementing Plan 9, which involves resurrecting people who have recently died by stimulating their pituitary and pineal glands. The three alien ships return to Earth.

Joseph L. Mankiewicz - The Barefoot Contessa (1954)

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/1295/dvdcoverwx0.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Plot Synopsis by Hal Erickson

The Barefoot Contessa begins at the funeral of Ava Gardner, a former Spanish peasant, cabaret dancer and movie star, who at the time of her death was a full-fledged contessa. Her life story unfolds in flashback recollections from her mourners. Film director Humphrey Bogart recalls how his career was saved when he discovered Gardner on behalf of Howard R. Hughes-like mogul Warren Stevens. Press agent Edmond O'Brien remembers how Ava was wooed and then abandoned by mercurial millionaire Marius Goring, and Italian count Rosanno Brazzi reflects on how he was able to wed the tempestuous Gardner, only to watch his world crumble after revealing on their wedding night that he was "only half a man." O'Brien received Best Supporting Actor awards at both the Academy Awards and Golden Globes in 1954.

Giorgio Pastina - Il cardinale Lambertini AKA Cardinal Lambertini (1954)

http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/6553/cover01o.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

PLOT SYNOPSIS:
In 1739 in Bologna, Archbishop Prospero Lambertini protects the love of Charles and of Countess Isabella, with the opposition of the powerful, and after many vicissitudes he marries them. He goes to Rome and becomes Pope Benedict XIV.
It is the reduction of the famous comedy (1905) by A. Testoni, that B. Berenson defined worthy of Shakespeare's comedy.
Witty and effervescent text . Superb and accurate setting.
(Morandini)

Andrew L. Stone - The Last Voyage (1960)

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b200/ScreaminJayHawkins/LastVoyagePoster.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Quote:
Can't wait for Titanic to be released on home video? Here's something that will hold you over--a terrific disaster movie made in 1960 before disaster movies were in vogue, MGM/UA Home Video release The Last Voyage (ML101193, $40). After the establishing shot of the passenger ship, the film opens on a note received by the captain, George Sanders, saying that there is a fire in the engine room. It closes, 91 minutes later, with the final debris sinking into the deep. The characters are flawed but never simple cut-outs--the captain, for example, makes both good and bad decisions as he tries to hide the initial problem from his passengers and stave off the inevitable as long as he can. Robert Stack and Dorothy Malone star as the two passengers the narrative chooses to focus upon--the rest of the characters with significant parts are all crew members--with Malone trapped beneath a steel girder after one of the boilers explodes and Stack working desperately to free her. Even the horrid child actress who plays their daughter has a few genuinely affecting moments. The film is consistently exciting, smartly paced, realistic and grandly staged (the special effects are quite good). It was ahead of its time when it was first released, but we're surprised it hasn't gathered a stronger cult following since then, though with the popularity of the Titanic change. The picture is presented full screen but cropping appears to be minimal (it actually seems to be very slightly windowboxed). The color transfer looks fine, with accurate fleshtones (Malone glows, even as she nears apparent death) and crisp hues. The monophonic sound is okay and the film has not been closed captioned. The chapter encoding and jacket guide are passable.

Joseph Anthony - The Matchmaker (1958)

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51S1XKT4YKL._.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Thornton Wilder's The Matchmaker is a rarity, a farce with heart. Because of their reliance on fast pacing, complicated plotting and characters that are usually types rather than fully formed people, even the best farces tend to skimp on warmth. But there's a sentimental, sometimes melancholy little melody that keeps sounding underneath the cacophony that accompanies Wilder's boisterous goings-on, and it's a welcome addition. Matchmaker is made even warmer by the presence of the charming Shirley Booth in the title role; she mixes a good dose of motherliness into her interpretation of the meddlesome, troublemaking Dolly. The character loses a bit in power as a result, but that loss is made up for by what it gains in appeal. Booth's interpretation seems right in line with director Joseph Anthony's take on the piece, which has a surprising gentleness and sense of nostalgia while still maintaining its comedic edge. The piece's staginess, especially in its use of characters addressing the camera directly, will turn some off, but it's handled effectively. Beyond Booth, the cast is also expert, with Paul Ford appropriately blustering and Anthony Perkins and Shirley MacLaine sweetly appealing. Though not a great film, Matchmaker is pleasant whimsy -- and superior to the film of its musical version, Hello, Dolly. --Craig Butler, AllMovieGuide
