In 814 A.D. Johanna is determined to resist her predetermined life as a woman. She is convinced that she must follow a higher calling and her destiny will lead her down a path, closer to God, but at the ultimate price.
At the Cathedral School in Dorstadt, Johanna meets Count Gerold. Their friendship blossoms into love. When Gerold goes off to war, Johanna makes a fateful decision: Disguised as a man, she joins the Benedictine Monastery in Fulda and becomes a renowned healer. Dangerously close to being exposed, Johanna flees to Rome, where she is reunited with Gerold. While she can hide her true identity, she cannot hide her love from him.
Still, Johanna moves up the church ranks and the danger surrounding her increase every step of the way. She must decide whether to follow God or the man she loves. But it turns out the decision is not hers to make, Joan (Johanna Wokalek) uses her wiles and the love of Count Gerold (David Wenham) to maneuver herself as heir to Pope Sergius (John Goodman) and she is elected Pope and her many enemies might strike at any moment.

There has long been speculation about the stories of a female Pope in the Middle Ages, and Catholics have been historically divided on whether this legend is fact or myth. Though most scholars believe the tale to be mere myth, the concept has yielded several stories that have explored the more romantic elements of its circumstances. A young woman born in Germany in the 9th Century disguises herself as a man and eventually ascends through the ranks of the Vatican to become the Pope. The stories of her life, written first in the 13th Century, always contain a concealed relationship that inevitably produces a pregnancy that, upon her horseback miscarriage, reveals her gender. From there, the legend either dictates that she dies in the process of the miscarriage or she is literally torn apart by angry mobs. "People believe what they prefer to be true," observed 17th century philosopher Francis Bacon. Few historical mysteries are as applicable to this as that of Pope Joan, the ninth century woman who, it is said, lived disguised as a man and rose to become Pope.
A 1972 film graphically depicted the latter ending, though a 1996 novel by Donna Woolfolk Cross and its 2009 adaptation to German cinema chose the less violent alternative. In this hotly-anticipated epic, Constantin Film, producers of THE NAME OF THE ROSE, THE HOUSE OF THE SPIRITS and PERFUME: THE STORY OF A MURDERER decided, started this project during three years. With practically non-existent press outside of Europe and grosses in that continent only covering the production's cost, Pope Joan eluded most radar screens and eventually experienced a very limited art house distribution in America. “I'm very impressed and touched by the work, I love the movie. Pope Joan it's showing in English, as originally filmed, though there's an option to view the dubbed-into-German version--not the one I recommend, unless you know someone who speaks only German”, declared some weeks ago the autor, Donna Woolfolk Cross.
