Andrei Kravchuk’s picture “The Admiral” has just been released in Russia. It focuses on the life, last love affair, and death of an early 20th century leader Alexander Kolchak. An Admiral of the Royal Navy, polar explorer and oceanographer, Kolchak led the White Guards in the Russian civil war only to be shot down by the Reds at age 46. “The Admiral” may best be described as a blend of historical melodrama and epic battle scenes. The man who shot it, Andrei Kravchuk, is a winner of several international awards.

Andrei Kravchuk's 'Admiral' is the latest big beast on the scene, looking likely to break new local box office records. That said it's also a subtle film, that treats its central subject -- the renowned Tsarist Polar explorer, World War I naval commander and leader of the White Army forces in Siberia, Admiral Alexander Kolchak -- with sympathy, itself a piece of historical revisionism that certainly wouldn't have been possible a decade or two ago.
Its pedigree certainly bodes well, coming as it does from the Channel One film production outfit that brought viewers Timur Bekmambetov's "Night Watch," as well as his more recent "Irony of Fate: Continuation." Star Konstantin Khabensky (Kolchak) topped the bills in all three movies, and he's rejoined in "Admiral" by fellow "Irony" actors Yelizaveta Boyarskaya, as Kolchak's final love Anna Timireva, and Sergei Bezrukov, as General Kappel, his friend in military service but rival in love.
For Kravchuk, however, it's a distinct departure from his previous film, "The Italian," a small and intimate drama set in a contemporary Russian orphanage. "Admiral" took almost five years to make, and the director is helped by some spectacular special effects in battle scenes, as well as by quality ensemble acting and a strong script, although there's a lot of action condensed into the epic tale. ~ The Moscow Times
