Egemen, in his thirties, works at an advertising agency and is forced to live with his mother Gulseren. For Egemen, life has meant dealing with his mother's mental blackouts and is a small, private version of hell. For Gulseren, on the other hand, the only thing that makes life worth living is Egemen. He's the only person that she wants to be with. The thought of anything separating her from her son is enough to drive her mad. For Egemen, the office is the only place where his life approaches normality. And there's his boss Umay, a woman whom he finds attractive. But how can he cultivate his interest in Umay with his mother looming over his life?

Turkish filmmaker Çagan Irmak was in town yesterday to present his latest film, In Darkness (Karanliktakiler), as part of the Montreal World Film Festival.
This drama, which tells a poignant tale of suffering, of wholly unhealthy mother/son relationships and of forgetting oneself is to be seen, both for the quality of the script and exceptional performances by the actors.
Actors Erdem Akakoe and Meral Cetinkaya, the son and mother respectively, play the dysfunctional duo with passion. Without ever falling into melodrama - which could be easily done here - they totally carry the film on their shoulders.
Having said that he took inspiration from his neighbours in Istanbul, Çagan Irmak paints, throughout the film, a certain portrait of modern Turkey, the Mediterranean Turkey. His country, he says, is currently experiencing profound changes and this film depicts some of these.

In Darkness, a delicious tale by Turkish filmmaker Cagan Irmak, presented this week at FFM. Egemen (Erdem Akakce, excellent), a thirtysomething man that is slightly naive, lives with his tyrannical and completely whacked-out mom (Meral Çetinkaya). While mommy spends her days sequestered in their home, shouting and throwing buckets of water out the window on the heads of little neighbourhood rascals who continuously bother her, the son is a jack of all trades at an advertising office. Coffee, lunch, errands,...he takes cares of everything, with a smile, and never pouts. But there comes a moment when his progenitor, who spends her days calling him up to berate him and who throws these temper tantrums at any moment, seriously takes things too far... After all, there's a limit to everything, no?
Presented as part of the FFM on September 4, 5 and 6th, In Darkness (Karanliktakiler) from Turkish director Çagan Irmak is a highly original work, lead by two mighty fine performances. Also noteworthy is the cinematography and artistic direction, of great beauty, that succeed in contrasting the modernity and luminosity of the ad agency with the darkness and ancient character of the apartment where mommy barricades herself. Funny and surprising.
