Cassel plays Max, who's about to get married and about to embark on a business trip to Japan. He bumps into an old friend, and by virtue of several coincidences - in fact the film hinges on a whole lot of these "coincidences" - remembers a love affair, and sets off in pursuit of his old flame. It remains mysterious to the viewer why Max turns his life around. Several of the characters share this passion for whimsy and spontaneity. Themes and intertexts such as Pygmalion, Ugly Duckling, Comedy of Errors, etc. are alluded to or openly "cited".
