Grzegorz Królikiewicz - Wieczne pretensje aka Permanent Objections (1975)

The second part of the loose trilogy beginning with Na wylot and concluding with Dancing Hawk. Whilst it's only half as impressive as these films, it's still full of Królikiewicz's formal inventiveness with sound and image (he also edited the film).

Franek, a petty criminal and gambler, befriends a man who performs inspections of meat plants. His assistant. Rysio, suspects wrongdoings at the slaughterhouse. Franek, despite his age, cannot find a place in life, with nothing achieved and, what's more, still not knowing what to do.

Well, this description helps nothing for someone unfamiliar with reality of People's Republic of Poland in 1970s.

In other words:
Rysio, a strong character, is an inspector. He controls meat factories. Why so? He has been busted before as a manager of one for incorrectness in accounting.
But without knowing of "Meat scandal" of 1960s one would not comprehend the plot, especially that everything is actually only hinted, nothin directly said. So "Meat scandal" was a major investigation in 1964 regarding a scheme in trading with meat. I'll not go into details of socialist, centrally controlled economy, I'll just say that some people got death sentence and many got life as a result, so serious was the affair.
So, Rysio has been probably involved and in the beginning of the film he's in sort of exile, but asked to get involved in controlling others now.

I can see there's no subs, but maybe they're not that important here since there aren't many things spoken.

The film's impact is very much a result of set design which was made by Zbigniew Warpechowski, one of most important Polish avant-garde artists of the period.
