Nature documentaries and especially bird documentaries (say like March of the Penguins) typically over-narrate – with the goal of anthropomorphizing their subject matter: as if humans take comfort in the view that all species act and behave just like they do (or at the very least just have real strong ‘family values’). Le Peuple Migrateur / Winged Migration is successful because it does not do any of this. Not only is the narration thankfully sparse (in French with French titles/English subtitles, with a few misspellings). But the birds in this film are not presented as ‘little humans’, and the filmmakers do not attempt to show us how they interact in ‘human’ ways. The film’s message is that birds are creatures of habit and finally, machines—in other words, they are the polar opposite of humans.
