As a child, Archibaldo de la Cruz experiences a moment that leaves a lasting impression. This traumatic experience blends erotic fantasy, fetishism and death, and those three elements are indelibly tangled together in Archibaldo's mind. Consequently, adult Archibaldo, now a wealthy, respected artist, has a few problems with women. His 'ideal' woman is Carlotta. He's drawn primarily to her purity and innocence. In fact, he loves nothing more than to watch her praying.
Unfortunately, whenever Archibaldo experiences sexual attraction to women, murderous tendencies are also evoked. The film concentrates on Archibaldo's problematic relationships with several women--the hardened, attention seeking flirt, Patricia Terrazas, and also the model, Lavinia. Archibaldo's murderous erotic fantasies blend so well with Bunuel's style. Several surreal scenes take place amidst swirling smoke and dancing flames. But just what is real and what is fantasy?
Fans of Bunuel will truly appreciate this early black and white film set in Mexico. While it's a precursor to Bunuel's perfect masterpiece "Belle de Jour", the two films are clearly created by the same hand, and the issues are the same--obsession, fetishism, and the duality of desire. However, "The Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz" contains a comic element absent in "Belle de Jour." If you enjoy this film, I also recommend "Mademoiselle"
