Masaaki Yuasa - Mind Game (2004)

Struggling manga artist and all-round loser Nishi runs into his childhood crush Miyo, only to find she´s on the verge of getting married to someone else. She invites him for a chat at her father´s restaurant and he ends up getting shot by yakuza moneylender pursuing her father. When in the afterlife he takes issue with God for giving him not only a pointless death, but a pointless life, he finds himself alive back in Tokyo. He rescues Miyo and her sisters through a nifty timeshift and finds himself part of a modern version of Jonah and the Whale, all the while hoping, dreaming, seeing and really living.
A kaleidoscope of animation styles and colors, from realistic to arty, hallucinogenic to scratchy, childlike to very adult, all swirl together in a manic mixture and keep the film constantly changing and challenging the audience. The film is an absurd yet endearing celebration of the moment, like a child let loose with finger paints.
