Michael Haneke - La Pianiste AKA The Piano Teacher (2001)

Won the Grand Prix in 2001 at Cannes.

This is a drama about the relationship between a piano teacher and her student. There are themes of sado-masachism, violence, sexual desire running all the way through, however what got to me was the shear realism of the emotions. I read a review on imdb that heavily criticizes the characters as not having emotion and the plot not being strong enough... If you want action adventure then go get a blockbuster, if you want a light-hearted view of s/m then get the secretary. The film is very subtle in places and yet very forceful in others. As a character study I found the film inciteful and moving.
