Plot:

Patrice Chéreau's explosive adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' epic novel La Reine Margot opens with a cold, loveless wedding ceremony, as sullen Catholic Marguerite de Valois (Margot) kneels to marry haunted Protestant Henri de Bourbon, King of Navarre. Behind the unhappy couple sits Margot's mother, Catherine de Medici, who has ordered the nuptials herself to supposedly terminate the torrid wars of religion that have split late-16th century France in two: Protestant and Catholic.
Predictably, however, the high-profile wedding gives way to further bloodshed. Soon after the ceremony, thousands of lives are lost in the Saint Bartholomew's Day massacre, orchestrated with meticulous malevolence by Catherine. In the midst of this horrific butchery, Protestant fighter La Môle falls unexpectedly into Margot's arms. Margot nurses him back to health and the pair start a precarious relationship amid great animosity.

Chéreau's costume drama par excellence is in several ways more explicit than Jean Dréville's version of the same story, shot some 40 years earlier with Jeanne Moreau in the lead role. In his adaptation, Chéreau juxtaposes gruesome set pieces, such as the devastating massacre and a thrilling hunting expedition, with austerely erotic chamber scenes. Sex and death are concurrently approximated in a rich screenplay. Margot longs to "see the image of my death amidst my pleasure" while Catherine's perfumer is also a poisoner.

La Reine Margot boasts accomplished costume and production design and a haunting choral score yet should be seen for its performances alone. The pale-skinned, ethereal Adjani has never bettered her turn as the titular heroine and won a César the following year. Nevertheless, she lost the Best Actress award at Cannes to popular veteran Virna Lisi, who returned from retirement to star as the ashen-faced puppeteer Catherine.

Solid support come from New Wave star Jean-Claude Brialy (Chabrol's Le Beau Serge), the piercingly attractive Miguel Bosé (Almodóvar's High Heels) and Asia Argento, daughter of cult Italian filmmaker Dario.
