German suspense/horror film, not about vampires in the modern sense. A 'Vampire' or 'Vamp' in 1920 was a purely sexual woman who lured men to their deaths. (Theda Bara was probably the most famous) This is an expressionist film, make on the heals of'Cabinet of Dr. Caligari' by the same director, cameraman and art directors. The title Genuine, is the name of the lead character, played by Fern Andra. She was both beautiful and talented but the material that survives does not suggest either of these qualities. Only parts of this are available today, much of it has been lost. (link)

After the tremendous success of Caligari, Wiene knew the failure with this Genuine, written by the great Carl Mayer again but a much less radical expressionnist film than the former. There is from time to time (and sometimes within the same shot) a strange mixture between Expressionism and Naturalism (settings or acting) with pinches of Cubism.
It is definitely less fascinating than Caligari but very much worthwile since it shows a good example of what Expressionnism was at the beginning of the 20's.
