quote:
Takuyoshi Masuoka is a lonely, depressed cameraman, obsessed with videotaping strangers. When he videotapes a man kiling himself with a knife in the subway, Masuoka begins to have strange, abstract visions and upon rewatching the videoptape sees things that did not occur when he filmed the event. He begins to develop his own theory as to what is going on and decides to investigate the man's strange death and the cause of his own visions.
His investigation leads him into a subterranean labyrinth in which he encounters the (now dead) suicidal man from the subway and discovers a mysterious, otherworldly girl chained in an underground cave. He brings her to his home, and from then on everything spirals downwards...
Marebito is in my opinion a very athmospheric, unique film, and it's one of my favourite J-horrors. The cinematography is brilliant - very dark and gloomy and the underground parts convey an excellent feeling of otherwoldliness. I've included a screenshot of Masuoka entering the underground - I love the almost cathedral-esque quality of that scene and how it makes him look lost and small in comparison to his surroundings. This is also how he comes across as a character - lost and alone in life, thrown into something that is much bigger than himself and which he is quite uncapable of handling.
There is gore, but to me the horror is definitely psychological. You can't be quite sure whether the main character really is having a supernatural experience or whether it is the discarding of his prozac affecting his mind. One of the things I like about this film is that it can lead to many different interpretations. The focus is almost entirely on Masuoka and the mysterious girl, which also adds to the film's sense of loneliness and abandonment. The girl's inability to survive in an unfamiliar world and Masuoka's protective obsession with her are weirdly touching, while the extent to which he is willing to go to get her what she needs, as well as the entire concept of the film itself are definitely very creepy.
