Dogme keeps on rolling with this 20th certified film - a mockumentary looking at a drama school in Brussels, focusing on the rampant ego of its star lecturer
Well over half a decade after the initial Vow Of Chastity, Dogme 95 certificated films continue to pop up. Some have been so dire they eluded cinematic release (The Lovers), some have strained the rules to breaking point (The King Is Alive) but there's life in the old Dogme yet - or something like it at least, as this lively film demonstrates.
A TV film crew arrives at a prestigious drama school in Brussels. Among the staff is Pierre Radowsky (Lekeux), a physically unprepossessing man (short, weak-chinned, bald and bespectacled), he struts round in leather trousers and sounds off loudly and wildly at his students. What's more, he's got a sleazy rep - we first meet him as he's pleading with one of his departing students that he loves her. Seduction of students is part of his modus operadii.
Pierre calls his "experimental" teaching system the "Open Door Method"; it involves abusing and terrorising his students. He says to one, Jérôme (Le Maire), "I want you to be shit-scared now, so later you can play Titus Andronicus." He may have a point, but any real method is soon subsumed into the madness of his unbridled egotistical rants and creepy sexual advances on the women. The latter comes to a head when the four male staff hold auditions ostensibly for a new female class member, but actually to find Pierre a new mistress to keep him happy. When Pierre goes too far with the new girl, footage soon appears on TV, the harrassment story accompanied by this headline "OUTRAGE AT THEATRE SCHOOL". But still the principal defends him: "Pierre pushed her to the limit; that's all there is to it."
