In 1978, the BBC set itself the task of filming all of William Shakespeare's plays for televisio. The resulting productions, renowed for their loyalty to the text, utilised the best theatrical and television directors and brought great performances from leading contemporary actors.

When Helena administers a cure to the gravely ill King of France, he offers her a choice of husband. Helena chooses Bertram, the Count of Rousillon. He insists that he will never be her 'true' husband unless she wears his family ring and becomes pregnant with his child. Following him to Florence, Helena embarks upon a plan that will lead her to claim her rightful spouse.

All's Well That Ends Well won both BAFTA and RTS Awards and was considered one of the best of the BBC Shakespeare series. Director Elijah Moshinsky wais said to have magnificently framed the scenes and highlighted the domestic nature of the play. The cast also received great acclaim.

The BBC Television Shakespeare was a set of television adaptations of the plays of Shakespeare, produced by the BBC between 1978 and 1985. The series was initiated by Cedric Messina, and produced by Messina, Jonathan Miller, and Shaun Sutton; directors and other crew varied from play to play. The entire series has been released on video, under the banner title The Complete Dramatic Works of William Shakespeare and on DVD as The (BBC TV) Shakespeare Collection. The BBC had presented series of Shakespeare's plays in the past: An Age of Kings (BBC, 1960) and Spread of the Eagle (BBC, 1963), but this ambitious project would need support from an American partner to provide access to the United States market. Time-Life, Exxon, Metropolitan Life, and Morgan Guarantee Trust Company became the American partners. The brief description of the series wrote into the contract for the series specified: "the plays were to be set in Shakespeare's own time or in the historical period of the events (such as ancient Rome for Julius Caesar, around 1400 for Richard II), they were to be no more than 2½ hours long, and they were to have 'maximum acceptability to the widest possible audience.'"[1]
The productions were almost all made using multi-camera techniques at the BBC Television Centre studios, although As You Like It and Henry VIII were shot on location. They often featured performances from well-known stage actors who specialized in Shakespeare.
The thirty-seven plays (17 comedies, 10 tragedies, and 10 histories) of the Shakespearean canon were presented in seven series. Since The Two Noble Kinsmen was considered to be primarily the work of John Fletcher and Shakespeare's authorship of Edward III was still in doubt at the time, these plays were not included in these series.
