George Cukor - Little Women (1933)

This, the best version of this much filmed Louisa May Alcott novel, movie won the Oscar for Best Writing (Adaptation) and was also nominated for Best Picture. It stars Katharine Hepburn, Joan Bennett, Jean Parker, Frances Dee, Spring Byington, Edna May Oliver, and Paul Lukas. Director George Cukor was also nominated. Hepburn is the headstrong, creative writing daughter of Byington, and sister of pretty, though weak, Dee, Bennett & Parker. Oliver is their rich, and somewhat obnoxious about it, Aunt. Henry Stephenson plays their neighbor that takes a liking to them, particularly Dee, and whose son 'Laurie' (Douglass Montgomery) becomes friends to Hepburn and a part of their family. When Hepburn's character goes away, leaving 'Laurie' broken hearted, she meets Professor Baer (played by Paul Lukas).




George Cukor directed this classic adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's sentimental novel with a shimmering lavishness that is a prime example of the classic Hollywood style at its best. The story concerns the lives of four New England sisters -- Jo (Katharine Hepburn), Amy (Joan Bennett), Meg (Frances Dee), and Beth (Jean Parker) -- during the time of the Civil War. Jo desires to leave home to become a writer, but decides to stay to help the family. But Meg announces her plans to get married, so Jo leaves for New York City. As she settles down to a writing career, she meets Professor Fritz Bhaer (Paul Lukas), who helps her with her work. While Jo is away, Amy falls in love and marries Jo's old flame Laurie Laurence (Douglass Montgomery).
