Two Chicago musicians are accidental witnesses to a gangland massacre and suddenly find themselves in even more urgent need of a job that will take them out of town for a while. Joe (Tony Curtis) is the smooth talker, and Jerry (Jack Lemmon) is the worrier. But both find themselves out of their depth with the disguise they have to adopt to avoid the mob - two new recruits to an all-girl jazz band.

As "Josephine" and "Daphne" the boys have to avoid detection and stay out of trouble. Not easy when "Josephine" falls for "Sugar" (Marilyn Monroe) who is the singer in the band, and "Daphne" is targetted by an aged playboy (Joe E. Brown).

Life gets really complicated when Joe adopts another male persona to seduce "Sugar", and the Chicago mobs turn up for their convention at the hotel where our heroes are playing.

Review

What can I say... It's a classic, and members of the American Film Institute voted it as the funniest movie of all time. That's quite an achievement for a film over thirty years old. To fans of more recent comedies it might seem very tame, but the class of the writing and performances will always outshine less subtle fare.

Billy Wilder had been writing and directing for thirty years when he came to this project. The sure touch he had shown in the few years prior to this movie would be proven time and time again throughout the next two decades, often in films starring Jack Lemmon. He had directed Monroe four years previously in 'The Seven Year Itch', and of course Tony Curtis came with very solid credentials.

All looked set for a 'sure thing' but it is well documented that the filming was anything but smooth. Monroe was going through a very difficult time, and her insecurity made her very vulnerable to illness and subsequently her performances were below her best. The pressures were on the other actors, especially Lemmon and Curtis, to always be performance perfect because Wilder would have to use whatever take Monroe was got right. It is a credit to the professionalism of all concerned that this never shows on the screen.

Although many films of the day were in colour, and Monroe's contract even stipulated that her pictures should be, it was the makeup that had to be used to turn Curtis and Lemmon into convicing girls that was the problem. It gave their face a green tinge, and so Wilder persuaded all concerned to do it in black & white. In a way this helps the film's classic status.

There are many moments in the film that stick in the memory and to single out any one as being representative of the film as a whole would be wrong. The opening scenes in Chicago, and when the mob turn up at the hotel play as a great pastiche of the gangster films of the thirties, there are great musical numbers, the fun of watching Curtis and Lemmon masquerading as girls whilst trying not to let their libidos give them away, and some great one-liners.
