Nagisa Oshima - Ai to kibo no machi AKA A Street of Love and Hope (1959)

Description: Before being raised to the level of full director by his employer Shochiku Ofuna Studios, Oshima Nagisa worked as an assistant director assisting in the making of program pictures which, at the time, dominated Japanese theater screens. These films were quite formulaic, but they were popular amongst the mass Japanese audience. These films were generally divided up into certain genres, comedies, period dramas, etc., and then into certain age groups. The directors of these films primarily stuck to a certain method of film making and they were supposed to indoctrinate their assistants into the same system.

There were of course some directors who disliked this system, so they tried to bring new life to program pictures by using new camera techniques and such, but for the most part their efforts were ignored by their producers and film critics, so, instead of continuing to go against the grain, they allowed themselves to go along with the system and direct complete schlock. However, some directors such as Masumura Yasuzo and Nakahira Ko changed many aspects of film with their early works, especially with Kisses and Crazed Fruit, and many young assistant directors began to take notice. One of these young directors was, of course, Oshima Nagisa.

Although an assistant director, Oshima assisted on only around fifteen films during his five years in the position. Instead, Oshima used his time to write screenplays and film criticism. In one essay, Oshima attacked his employer while lauding the films of other studios. The president of Shochiku, obviously aware of the fall of ticket sells for domestic films because of television and foreign films, primarily American films, turned Ofuna studios into a home for promising young directors and Oshima was given first shot to make a new type of film.

The film Oshima made was originally titled The Boy Who Sold is Pigeon, but the producers changed the films title to Street of Love and Hope, , against Oshima's wishes. The film focuses on a young man named Masuo whose father has passed away, whose mother is sick, and whose sister is mildly retarded. In order to make ends meet, Masuo works at his mother's shoeshine booth and also sells his sister's pet pigeons. It would of course seem that selling the pigeons would be a one time thing, but since the birds are homing pigeons they return to Masuo and then he is able to sell them again.

Trying to make ends meet this way, Masuo also receives help from his teacher who is trying to land him a good job and he also falls under the wing of Kyoko, an older student whose heart is touched after Masuo sells his pigeons to her. However, after his scam is revealed, can these feelings truly remain the same?

Street of Love and Hope received little press from its studio upon its release and was primarily shown in small theaters, but critics soon latched onto it and viewed Oshima as being similar to Jean-Luc Goddard and Francois Truffaut in France who were ushering in the French New Wave with their stellar films Breathless and 400 Blows. Oshima was never comfortable being labeled as New Wave and he stated that the Japanese New Wave movement was not truly a New Wave movement because the directors were still shackled to the large studios. Yet, there was definitely something new in the air and this short film would be the first to bring a new type of filmmaking to Japan. -- Amazon.com
