Herbert Achternbusch - Hick's Last Stand (1990)

Synopsis (english)
[In Hick's Last Stand] we witness yet another incarnation of a Last Bavarian Mohican, incoherently staggering across the badlands of South Dakota and Wyoming in white cowboy boots, black leather jacket, and a feather on his hat. Without dialogue, without other players besides Herbert Achternbusch, and with the most minimal narrative progression, the film consists only of an image track over which we hear Hick's extended monologue, a declaration of love to the absent Mary, occasionally interrupted by songs by Judy Garland, Native American chants, and classical music. Here Achternbusch's fear of filmically subjugating other countries or people finds its most radical expression: a jerky camera captures endless images of passing trucks, empty landscapes, abandoned houses; frequent zooms and out-of-focus shots suggest the work of a hobby filmer, as does the grainy quality of the image that appears to be blown-up super-eight material. (The credits list Herbert Achternbusch as partly responsible for the camerawork.) This is Indian territory, Hick's voice reminds us, but, except for a furtive look at a Pow Wow, the natives are absent. "People who cannot endure injustice, will not survive," he explains.

Der Sieg der Indianer am Little Bighorn über die Weißen war der einzige in meiner Jugend. Ja, ich bin Rassist, ich hasse die Weißen und bin nicht länger ihr Tanzbär, in Kansas ist Land billig, weil die Bauern verarmen. Ich habe dafür kein Verständnis, weil ich nie was besessen habe. Jetzt müssen die Bauern halt auch saufen wie ich und die Indianer. Die Amerikaner haben auf die Indianer so lange eingedroschen, bis die Indianer blöder waren als die Weißen. Es bedurfte ungeheurer Gewalt, bis das den Weißen gelang. Diese amerikanischen Hinterwäldler mussten sich riesig anstrengen, bis sie die liebenswerte Kultur der Indianer unter ihre eigene Niveaulosigkeit erniedrigt und erstickt hatten.
Amerika ist so friedlich, weil sich die Amerikaner nicht in ihrem Land austoben. In welchem anderen Land sie sich gerade austoben, weiß ich nicht. Die Männer auf den Toiletten sind scheu, entschuldigen sich und verdrücken sich. Die Straße wird bald aufhören, geteert zu sein. Habe heute Nacht von Judy Garland geträumt. Habe mit ihr in Hollywood getanzt. Bin vor Aufregung augewacht. Hick "I can't give you anything but love."
