Tony Gatlif - Swing (2002)

Swing tells the story of Max, a young boy whose fascination with gypsy jazz music leads him to the Manouche, a community of gypsies living on the outskirts of Strasbourg. He swaps his Discman for a guitar and begins taking lessons from virtuoso Miraldo (played by the Manouche guitarist Tchavolo Schmitt). Soon he develops a friendship with Swing, a young gypsy girl whose life, compared to Max’s, seems impossibly free and romantic. Swing doesn’t see it that way. Her tomboyish style is really an attempt to avoid the sometimes harsh conditions under which women live in gypsy society.
