Walter Hill - Broken Trail (2006)

Broken Trail is set at the end of the 19th century when the Wild West was being tamed as the United States segued into the 1900s.A weathered cow hand persuades his estranged nephew to accompany him on a horse drive from Oregon to Wyoming. On the trail they cross paths with an unsavory pimp transporting five young Chinese women sold into slavery and prostitution by their impoverished families. When the cowboys rescue the five women their paths and their fates become intertwined.




The film, which won the Golden Globe for best miniseries in 2007, sets this unusual and compelling story against the awesome and fantastically beautiful scenery of the Pacific Northwest. Most westerns are set in the arid Southwest, but this gem comes from the green and mountainous region on both sides of the US-Canada border. The photography is stunning, making the background an essential part of the film. The Northwest should have been given star billing along with Robert Duvall and Thomas Haden Church.
