"Manji" is vividly cinematic, it has a complex narrative structure and a handful of superb performances. Director Masumura has created a film that works at different levels. Some films scare you, some films make you laugh, but this film made me levitate across the room. It begins with a mysterious woman telling a writer a strange story of lust, love and obsession. Flashbacks give us the ability to look into the woman's past. The movie revolves around a homosexual affair but I was rather amazed at the way Masumura transcends the arc of a very unusual love. Almost immediately, I realized that homosexuality is far from being the main central idea of the film. Masumura is in total control of his film and he dictates that his story is not going to fall into any category, easily. Here is a production that covers so much ground effortlessly. Before you think you can anticipate Masumura's next move, he changes tactics; it constantly surprises you with its beauty and intelligence. Kyôko Kishida ("Woman in the Dunes") gives a brilliant, unforgettable performance in the leading role. The rest of the cast is almost as good but it is clear that Kishida dominates with her luminous presence. The unforgettable music score is by Tadashi Yamauchi, and it was stunningly photographed (in color) by Setsuo Kobayashi. Simply put, one of the very best films of the 1960s. Highly recommended!"
