Description: At 40 years distance there is a fascination to this authentic portrait of the brutalities of gay prison life. Playwright John Herbert based the script on his own experiences in prison and it was filmed in a real prison in Quebec. When ingénue prisoner Smitty arrives he is offered protection by his cellmates, the draggy Queenie and the moody Rocky. Secure in his heterosexual identity he is made aware of the need for protection when he narrowly avoids a gang rape. Although he is saved, another inmate is not so lucky. Taken under the wing of Rocky he learns that he must pay for his protection by serving his protector. Every day is a constant power struggle but he learns the ropes fast until he feels able to turn the tables. –BFI Lesbian & Gay Film Festival
