Jack Black And Steve Pink Want To Show You How To Survive A Robot Uprising

Wednesday was an awesome day for writer Niel Strauss. First his book Emergency: This Book Will Save Your Life was optioned by Robert Downey Jr. and Columbia Pictures and then, later that same day, The Office writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky were hired to adapt his book The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists. If Wednesday was was Niel Strauss Day, then today is Daniel H. Wilson Day.

No less than four hours after it was announced that Steven Spielberg will make Wilson's Robopocalypse his next film, io9 reports that Jack Black and Steve Pink, the director of Hot Tub Time Machine and writer of Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity, have optioned the rights to How To Survive a Robot Uprising: Tips on Defending Yourself Against the Coming Rebellion. The project has been around for years, Mike Myers previously owning the rights, but nothing has ever come of it. The book is a satire that informs its readers on how they can stay alive once robots have become sentient and plan world domination. It's unknown if Black will star and/or if Pink will direct.

Apparently robot uprising movies are back in vogue and I suppose there's no better person to usher it in than Wilson (the man does hold a Ph.D in robotics, after all). Provided it gets made quickly, the film could have a chance to easily beat Spielberg's film to the box office, as Robopocalypse won't be arriving until summer 2013. Even if it doesn't, however, the two are expected to have completely different tones, so it likely would matter if they came out the same week. All in all, I'm glad to see Steve Pink get more work - provided it's not a remake of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
