On Tuesday, a story broke when Zach Galifianakis appeared on Comedy Death-Ray Radio and mentioned that he was in "deep protest" about events transpiring on the set of the film he is currently working on. Many, including myself, assumed that he had taken issue with the announced Mel Gibson cameo. Turns out that the assumption may have been right on the money as Gibson's cameo has been canceled.
The Wrap is reporting that director Todd Phillips has decided to not have the Lethal Weapon star appear in his film as a tattoo artist. In a statement to the press, Phillips was quoted as saying that he "had the full backing of [Warner Bros. President] Jeff Robinov and his team," but he realized that "filmmaking is a collaborative effort, and this decision ultimately did not have the full support of my entire cast and crew."
I guess some people aren't so quick to forget racist, abusive phone calls. Many expected that the Gibson cameo would be the perfect salve to heal his relationship with mass audiences, but now it looks as though he'll have to find another way.
