Peter Collinson - You Can't Win 'Em All (1970)

In 1922, Adam Dyer and Josh Corey, two former soldiers in the U. S. Army, join a band of Turkish mercenaries. Seeking to aid the Sultan of the crumbling Ottoman Empire, they are hired by the local governor, Osman Bey, to escort his three daughters to Smyrna and to protect a gold shipment that is to accompany the three girls and their companion, Aila. Also hired to protect the gold is Colonel Elci, who instead plots to steal the shipment. Eventually Adam discovers that the gold is really lead, but he is informed by Aila that the caravan is secretly carrying a casket full of jewels. Adam, Josh, and Aila agree to share the treasure. Colonel Elci also learns of the jewels, but Aila kills him when he tries to steal them. Aila and Josh then escape with the jewels to Smyrna with Adam in pursuit, but Smyrna has been overrun by revolutionaries. The three are captured and the jewels lost, but they have unwittingly brought an ancient copy of the Koran, which the rebel general had been seeking. The grateful general releases the three to continue their adventures.
