Alain Resnais - L'amour à mort AKA Love Unto Death (1984)

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

~ Noel Megahey, DVD Times wrote:

L'Amour à Mort (Love Unto Death) is one of the more difficult Resnais films of the 80s. Featuring a core of actors from La Vie Est un Roman who would also go on to make Mélo (and are still working with Resnais on his most recent films), the film has a chamber mood, an enclosed and tightly constructed meditation on two complex subjects - love and death.

Elisabeth (Sabine Azéma) and Simon (Pierre Arditi) have been together as a couple for only a few months when Simon dies. To everyone's surprise he revives after a few minutes and appears to be quite healthy again. The couple's relationship appears to become more intense, but Simon is unable to come to terms with his near-death experience, feeling an irresistible desire to withdraw from life. Their friends, a married couple of Protestant pastors, Judith (Fanny Ardant) and Jérôme (André Dussollier) try to rationalise how Simon and Elisabeth must feel, offering guidance and consolation through theological and philosophical discussions, but the couple are beyond the reach of human understanding or explanation, and the pervasive and persuasive music of 'the other', of a love beyond death, exerts an irresistible attraction.

Constantly searching for a new form of expression, expanding on and even defying traditional cinema techniques, Resnais turned to composer Hans Werner Henze to create musical pieces for the film, not as a soundtrack to underline the emotions of the characters, but as scenes in themselves, telling part of the story that cannot be described or illustrated with images - Simon's death, and the confusion and turmoil of emotions that his near-death experience has filled him with.

The film is relentlessly bleak and sombre in tone - there is no let-up from the dark and morbid reflections on death and suicide. Love itself is examined, but only under the shadow of death - love unto death, love beyond death, as the films title implies. The tone of the film is influenced strongly by the music which appears in fragments between scenes, set against a dark background with occasional images of falling snow. Between this, the anguish of Simon and Elisabeth and the philosophical meditations on love and death from Judith and Jérôme, this is not easy viewing and offers no easy answers.

Simon secretly loves Camille. Camille, due to a misunderstanding, falls for Marc Duveyrier. Marc, a handsome realtor, who's also Simon's boss, is trying to sell an apartment to Odile Lalande, Camille's sister. Odile really wants this apartment, despite the silent disapproval of her husband, Claude. Claude, somewhat wan in character, finds it hard to stomach the reappearance, after many years, of Nicolas. Nicolas, an old friend of Odile's becomes the confidant of Simon... The dialogue is in part made up of extracts of French hit songs, sung in situation by the actors. link

Alain Resnais - L'année dernière à Marienbad AKA Last Year at Marienbad (1961)

http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/8095/478boxebd348x490.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Not just a defining work of the French New Wave but one of the great, lasting mysteries of modern art, Alain Resnais’ epochal Last Year at Marienbad (L’année dernière à Marienbad) has been puzzling appreciative viewers for decades. Written by radical master of the New Novel Alain Robbe-Grillet, this surreal fever dream, or nightmare, gorgeously fuses the past with the present in telling its ambiguous tale of a man and a woman (Giorgio Albertazzi and Delphine Seyrig) who may or may not have met a year ago, perhaps at the very same cathedral-like, mirror-filled château they now find themselves wandering. Unforgettable in both its confounding details (gilded ceilings, diabolical parlor games, a loaded gun) and haunting scope, Resnais’ investigation into the nature of memory is disturbing, romantic, and maybe even a ghost story. Jacques Doillon, Alain Resnais, Jean Rouch - L'An 01 AKA The Year 01 (1973)

User comment from Imdb;
Some movies of the seventies seem to have been made yesterday;not this one.It's in fact one of the most dated works of its era.It's some gentler version of "Themroc" ,less pretentious, funny (in places) but not necessarily more palatable .

There's no story,but a spate of minisketches ,some of them witty,("There's no more property,so there're no more thieves" the warden says while opening the cells ),a lot of them tedious and repetitive.There was enough material to make a very good short,but 85 minutes it's inevitably too long.In a nutshell,let's stop working,let's stop producing,let's stop everything and all you need is love.Hence the title "l'an O1" (=year 01):why a 0,by the way?This is the typically "events of May 68 way of life" film.

If you like it ,try these :Claude Faraldo's "themroc" ,Agnès Varda's "l'une chante et l'autre pas" ,Jean-Luc Godard's " tout va bien"

It was Jacques Doillon's first effort.Although it seems puerile today,it nevertheless displays this director's intellectual ambitions.His best works remain the more accessible :the moving "un sac de billes" (1975)-which people who liked "au revoir les enfants" must see- and the strange disturbing "la drôlesse"(1979) which tells the story of A a hung-up young man who locks up a teenage girl in an attic.
