Alberto Lattuada - Il Mulino del Po AKA The Mill on the Po (1949)

DESCRIPTION
Il Mulino del Po was based on a novel by Riccardo Baccheli. Essentially an elaborate retelling of the old story about a pair of young lovers kept separated by family rivalries, the film is distinguished by its evocative location photography and tight, mathematically precise editing. Director Alberto Lattuada also manages to insert what one historian has labelled his "progressive ideology" into the proceedings. The romantic plotline is placed in context within the events leading up to the famous Po Valley farmers' strike of 1876; characteristically, Lattuada offers a topical political slant to the facts at hand. As in his other neorealist exercises, Lattuada manages to bridge the gap between "art" and box-office appeal in Il Mulino del Po. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Alberto Lattuada - Anna (1951)

Anna, a former sexy nightclub dancer who has become a hospital nurse, is on the verge of taking the veil. One day, She recognizes Andrea, her former fiancé, among the patients. Her troubled past suddenly comes back to her. Though engaged to Andrea, she was attracted to Vittorio, the owner of the nightclub where she performed as a singer and dancer. After Vittorio attempted to rape her, Andrea killed him. Following this tragedy. Anna decided to go into a convent. Andrea, who has been acquitted, now tries to persuade Anna to come back to him but at this very moment it is announced that a train has been derailed. Anna then understands that she must dedicate herself to her new vocation. (imdb)

Alberto Lattuada - I Dolci Inganni AKA Sweet Deceptions (1960)

Francesca, a seventeen-year-old Roman, is finally sure she has found love. Almost sure. She spends the day observing other lovers' behaviors and considering whether she is ready to jump. Her age notwithstanding, this movie is more about coming of age than about improper or illegal romantic relationships.

If Catherine Spaak, beautiful and innocent, acts with brio, the quality of the supporting cast makes the movie. From a fifty-year-old indebted socialite who is having too much fun for her daughter's taste to a jaunty gigolo who turns out to be eaten by unreciprocated love, the minor characters entertain, delight, and subtly teach valuable lessons to both Francesca and the audience.

This film's unpredictability is refreshing. Whether written or filmed, coming-of-age stories often fail to surprise or intrigue the audience. In I Dolci Inganni, most characters seem at first to be crazily entertaining walking clichés, but they later astonish the audience by revealing their depth and their inner struggles. If love is widely accepted as a common human need, it can be expressed in mysterious, unsettling, incomprehensible ways. The variety of its forms in the movie gives the spectator an opportunity to reflect on his or her own endeavors and dreams.

This movie will seem slow paced to Gen-Xers, but anybody interested in human nature should see it.
