Andrzej Zulawski - Possession (1981)

Director Andrzej Zulawski achieved his most widespread international success with this elliptical, allegorical tale of a disintegrating marriage and its grotesque byproducts. True to form, the director was able to coax deliciously unrestrained performances from Isabelle Adjani and the then-unknown Sam Neill as the bitter couple trapped in a torturous relationship. Zulawski's set-up is tantalizing: aided by the fluid, hypnotic camerawork of Bruno Nuytten, he uses the stark, oppressive cityscape of Berlin to mirror Neill's ever-increasing dread and discombobulation. Evoking elements of Vertigo (1958) and Repulsion (1965), Possession mixes the mundane with the shocking to create a compelling metaphor for the havoc that one man's obsession (and one woman's scorn) can wreak. Though the film's final act focuses on the more horrific elements of the tale -- namely, a bed-ridden, boyfriend-consuming creature which resembles a giant lower intestine, created by E.T.'s alien designer Carlo Rambaldi -- Zulawski never loses sight of the eerie, atmospheric qualities that elevate Possession above a mere genre film. ~ Michael Hastings, All Movie Guide

Andrzej Zulawski - La Note bleue AKA Blue Note (1991)

Description: Has Zulawski ever made a comedy? No, he has not. But "La note bleue" is the "funniest" of Zulawski's films. It is irony and some malice towards his heroes that make the ambience.
The story reminds that of Ken Russell's Gothic: the greatest romantic artists spent a day and a night at a country palace; left by the unpaid servants they had to prepare meals themselves. But the passions burst in an incontrollable way...
The artist are: Georges Sand, Alexandre Dumas (son), Eugene Delacroix, Ivan Tourgueniev and above all - Frédéric Chopin, who is the main hero of the film. Acted wonderfully by the great Polish pianist Janusz Olejniczak, he spends most time at his piano, playing madly and touchingly, fighting his illness (tuberculosis? now it is said that it was mucoviscidosis), frightened by smells and colours, engaged in sick erotic relationship with George Sand and her daughter (Sophie Marceau). Victorian himself, he is drowned in his libertine company because they adore him and finance his living - sad genius, meticulous and egocentric.
The music of Chopin is everywhere. If you do not like it you certainly will. Olejniczak plays with almost punk-rock energy, using the 19th-century instruments, and makes us realize convincingly why Chopin was beloved in the way the Beatles were 130 years later.

After seeing this movie, I just sat breathless in my armchair - I just hadn't seen such a movie before. Truly, a masterpiece on par with Peter Greenaway's finest. Beatufilly filmed, superbly acted (Olejniczak, a pianist by trade - a damn good one at that: he recorded the soundtrack to Polanski's "The Pianist" - is very true to the role of Chopin in his final moments), classy scenography... The action is presented in a way resembling the very atmosphere of the romantic period's art - hectic and rich in expression. The movie's goal is to portray emotions, not a plot - and this goal it achieves perfectly. But, as with romantic art, this movie requires a certain mindset - an openness to emotion - or it will be totally misunderstood. (from imdb)

Andrzej Zulawski - Trzecia czesc nocy aka The Third Part of The Night (1971)

Description: World War II Poland: a man gets a second chance. Michal's wife and child are killed by German soldiers, but in a nearby town he discovers and stays with a woman in labour who looks just like his dead wife. A complex and surreal work, the film is obsessed with the distinctions between love as self-preservation and self-sacrifice. But it's just as much the hallucinations of a dying man. Images of death are everywhere: endless corridors, figures framed in doorways (and later in coffins), a couple gunned down in bed. Not an easy film to come to terms with because of its cerebral nature and its self-consciousness; a haunting first feature, all the same.
