Probably the most notorious of Andy Warhol's films, Blow Job has been called, jokingly, the longest reaction shot in the history of cinema. In it, an anonymous young man's face is seen in close-up while he receives fellatio from an unseen partner. The serene voyeurism that runs through Warhols '60s films reaches a kind of apotheosis in Blow Job. Sexuality, which is a distinct subtext in a number of his films, becomes the subject of this one but, in a typically Warholian joke on pornography, all the "action" occurs off-screen.

Andy Warhol - Lonesome Cowboys (1968)

An outrageously funny spoof on the Western film, Lonesome Cowboys is a synthesis of Warhol's sorties into the New York underworld, but much more humorous and with closer adherence to a nonsensical plot. The film was photographed in Arizona, in a ghost town where (somehow) two of Warhol's superstars are discovered. The incongruous montebanks happen to be Viva, as chic and sarcastic as she was in Bike Boy and resembling a displaced model for Hound and Horn, and Taylor Mead. Mr. Mead is the zany of our time, and when five mysterious cowhands saunter into town, the hilarity commences. The cowboys are an odd assortment, a bit androgynous and city-wise, and they interact with the two in varying attitudes of lust and indifference in set-pieces of inspired film comedy. Often, Lonesome Cowboys reaches the ultimate in surrealist imagery: cowboy-deputy Mead performing the Lupe Velez Twist, his own choreographic distortion; or one of the cowboys performing ballet exercises at the hitching post. Viva's langorous seduction of the most innocent-looking among the cowboys is actually a satirical comment on sexual artifice. This erotic, sagebrush comedy has its cruel edge, and one feels that Andy Warhol attempts to make some statement about the nature of brotherly love and the impossibility of virtue rewarded in these times of fallen idols. Select just about any Warhol film from the mid-sixties and you'll find a scandal tucked away. Lonesome Cowboys's most notable run-in with the law was in Atlanta where it was seized after replacing Gone with the Wind in a mall theater. Lonesome Cowboys is filled with wildly comic setpieces, including a cowboy practising ballet moves at the hitching post and a peevish lecture on the misuse of mascara. These desperadoes are real trailblazers when it comes to libidinous appetites and it is here that Lonesome Cowboys distinguishes itself from the herd. Ric Burns - Andy Warhol: A Documentary Film (2006)

Plot Outline: No artist in the second half of the 20th century was more famous - or, perhaps, more famously misunderstood - than Andy Warhol. This two-part film, directed by Ric Burns, explores Warhol's astonishing artistic output - from the late 1940s to his untimely death in 1987 - paintings, drawings and photographs, films and television, books, magazines and musical performances. Set within the turbulent, changing context of his life and times, this portrait is the first to move deeply into the immense archives at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, the city of his humble origins. Obsessed with fame and a desire to transcend those origins, Warhol uniquely grasped the realities of modern society - the function of celebrity and of the mass media - and became the high priest of one of the most radical experiments in American culture, permanently penetrating and redefining the barrier between art and commerce.

Kim Evans - Andy Warhol (1987)

Description:
In his later career the American artist Andy Warhol (1928-87) was famous simply for being famous, so much had his own celebrity overtaken awareness of the art he actually produced. This paradoxical state of affairs receives a fascinating analysis in this film surveying Warhol's art. It begins with Warhol's early success in commercial art and reaction against the prevailing tenets of Abstract Expressionism, tracing his emergence as a leading figure of the American Pop Art movement of the early 1960s. It shows how his repeat images of mundane commodities such as Campbell's soup cans and Coca-Cola bottles, and the early mega-stars Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley, acquired iconic status as expressions of the American Dream in its new phase of mass-media culture and machine production. Warhol's activities as an 'underground' film-maker are also covered here in depth, with commentary from the cast members of such films as Sleep and the notoriously sexually explicit Chelsea Girls providing a unique insight beneath the mask-like surface of Warhol's images.

Andy Warhol - Mario Banana 1 & 2 (1964)

Drag Queen Mario Montez (often credited as Maria Montez) lounges lazily. We she her from shoulder up including a stunning fur wig. She peels a banana and nibbles it seductively, often emulating oral copulation. The film lasts less than three minutes and Mario never finishes the banana. In 1964 this may have been nearly pornographic and obscene but by today's standards it is tame and seems fairly unimaginative.
