Quote:

Marriage is hard work. It involves commitment, constant negotiation and putting up with your spouse's friends. Daniel Burman's superbly imaginative and entertaining Empty Nest is a comedic look at the problems inherent in married life and the difficulties associated with keeping a long-term relationship new and exciting. At once hilarious and nostalgic, Burman's film ponders reality itself while offering a profound consideration of memories and how they are created.

Burman invites the viewer into the quasisurrealist world of playwright Leonardo (played with Woody Allen-like guile by Oscar Martínez) and his wife Martha (wonderfully performed by All About My Mother's Cecilia Roth). The opening scene finds them at a dinner party with Martha's friends, where Leonardo is visibly bored and uncomfortable with any discussion of his work. Martha finally speaks for him, stating that Leo does not believe in the idea of talent in the artist; instead, he considers himself a craftsman honing his technique. He is especially glib when invited to see one of their friends' daughter's plays. “I've seen it,” he snaps, and from Martha's expression, the audience knows that this is not true.

The masterfully written script naturally interweaves plot twists, and Empty Nest is a testament to Burman's maturity as a director. The narrative sustains a sense of gravity throughout, but manages to treat the difficult topic of infidelity with delicacy and a dose of playfulness. This mischievous undertone is evident as the film traces Leonardo's obsession with freezing croissants, concocts a perfectly choreographed dance routine to help him chase a girl and pairs him with a perfect sidekick to get him through some rough patches.

Moving from the hectic streets of Buenos Aires to the stunning and peaceful calm of the Dead Sea, Empty Nest is laugh-out-loud funny even while its nostalgic scenes bring tears to the eye. Whether portraying marital tensions or bliss, Burman's brilliantly captured moments are always tinged with humour.

Plot Synopsis by Rebecca Flint Marx

Set in the vibrant Jewish community of Buenos Aires, Daniel Burman's second feature takes a poignant look at the lives of two men. One is a young man who is torn between his devotion to traditional family ties and the desire for something different, the other is an older bank employee who suddenly finds his life in complete turmoil. Santamaria (Enrique Pineyro) is terminated from his steady bank job as the world stock market experiences unpredictable convulsions, and his wife duly takes this development as an opportunity to put him out on the street. Forced to make a paltry living returning stolen wallets, Santamaria finds some hope in the form of a comely bathroom attendant (Stefania Sandrelli), who is waiting for her husband to be released from prison. Meanwhile, Ariel (Daniel Hendler) is chafing against the restraints of a predictable future that will see him take over his elderly father's (Hector Alterio) restaurant and marry a nice Jewish girl (Melina Petriella). Santamaria's and Ariel's stories are told in bits and pieces, contrasted against one another to demonstrate the many parallel universes that can co-exist in the same urban milieu. Esperando al Mesias was shown in competition at the Buenos Aires Independent Cinema Festival.

Daniel Burman - Todas las azafatas van al cielo AKA Every Stewardess Goes to Heaven (2002)

Synopsis:
Teresa (Ingrid Rubio) is a young stewardess, a free spirited woman unhappy in love who meets Julian (Alfredo Casero), a widowed and suicidal doctor, during a stop over.

Quote:

An austral fable set at the end of the world, Every Stewardess Goes To Heaven bathes in a strange ambiance of desolation and beauty. The film embraces Ushuaïa, its snow-covered peaks and frozen banks, but also its inhabitants, quasi-ghostly and distraught human beings. The director multiplies allegories, making the stewardess an angel whose wings would be those of a plane while the hospital shown to us like a corridor towards another life. The images pass slowly, posed and quiet, supported by an atmospheric soundtrack, making Every Stewardess Goes To Heaven a visually bewitching work.

Quote:

A delightful, offbeat romance that combines melancholy and mirth in just the right amounts, Daniel Burman's Every Stewardess Goes to Heaven is a worthy addition to the list of acclaimed pics that have emerged from Argentina recently, as well as a fine followup to Burman's multiple prize-winning (but very different) Waiting for the Messiah (1999). Ingrid Rubio, a sometimes shaky screen presence to date, finds her feet in this sentimental but intelligent story with quirky yet believable characters and stunning polar-circle settings. Charming fable about how people whom life has turned cold must learn to warm up again was well received at the Berlin fest, and further such showings are likely, though that's less than the movie deserves.
