The first of these three films, The Bird With the Crystal Plumage (see my review if you’re interested), was an international success—and was largely responsible for the spate of oddly named gialli that would dominate the Italian film scene for much of the early 1970’s. The success of Argento’s debut made finding financing for his second film, 1970’s Cat O’ Nine Tails a relatively simple task—and also ensured that he’d be able to work with some higher caliber actors than he had in his first stint behind the camera. The end result is a finely crafted gialli that isn’t as flashy and accomplished as his later works (like his masterpiece, Deep Red), but certainly shows signs of the developing sense of style that would come to dominate his work...

Ultimately, many hardcore Argentophiles regard Cat O’ Nine Tails as one of the auteur’s lesser works. And while it isn’t as masterful as his later gialli like Deep Red, it’s still a fine example of the director’s burgeoning talents. Couple this with some fine performances (particularly from Karl Malden), and a smart, inventive, and multi-layered script that’s filled with reversals and red-herrings (an early nod to the work of Hitchcock, most likely) and you still come away with a film that is better than many of the other gialli of the time period. A combination of alchemy, architecture, and horror, director Dario Argento's Inferno is a pulsing thriller filled with murder and supernatural mayhem. The peculiar proceedings are set into motion in both New York and Rome when two young women, Sara (Eleonora Giorgi) and Rose (Irene Miracle), find a book called The Three Mothers, a tome of alchemy written by an architect named Varelli. According to the book, Varelli built a trio of resting places for the Three Mothers, an evil trio whose identities remain at the core of the film's mystery. Rose's brother and Sara's boyfriend is Mark (Leigh McCloskey), a music student in Rome who jets to New York after Sara is murdered and Rose disappears. He follows up Rose's research on The Three Mothers and, with the help of his sister's neighbor, Elise (Daria Nicolodi), comes to the realization that the building they are in is one of Varelli's. Along the way, Mark encounters a variety of quirky characters including Elise's butler (Leopoldo Mastelloni), the building's maid (Alida Valli), a cat-hating bookseller named Kazanian (Sacha Pitoeff), and the infirm Professor Arnold (Feodor Chaliapin) and his nurse (Veronica Lazar). After a series of murders and a revelation that the butler and the maid have been plotting to steal Elise's jewels, Mark discovers a secret series of passages within the building. They lead him to its core where he finds the wheelchair-bound Professor Arnold, who explains that he is really the architect Varelli. After a violent struggle, the dying old man confesses to Mark that he is merely a servant to the Mothers. The building begins to burn out of control, but before Mark can escape, he discovers the shocking identity of the Three Mothers.

Two shots give you a sense of Dario Argento's wicked dazzle: The encircling iris in the psychedelic jam session is astoundingly revealed as a vision from within a guitar, Marisa Fabbri's terror at the park pivots on a jump-cut that, in the moment it takes to light a cig, leaves her alone with death. He opens on a divide (the music in the credits suspended between Ennio Morricone's Euro-acid score and the stark beating of a heart) and proceeds through a rich system of identifications, triggered by a stranger in fedora and shades watching drummer Michael Brandon in his studio; their confrontation takes place in an abandoned theater, where the stalker ends with a switchblade in his belly and a grinning, masked figure takes it all in from the balcony. Brandon somehow escapes accusations only to be besieged by shadowy threats, the hiss of a cat, the public decapitation which, described to him at a party, turns up as a castrating motif in his dreams. "Oh, you heterosexuals," swishy shamus Jean-Pierre Marielle snaps before trying to break his "fantastic record of failure" by sniffing out the source of the hero's distress -- for his troubles he's pricked with a venomous syringe, left to transcend "faggot" stereotype while expiring against the lavatory's tiled wall.
