Thirteen noted German filmmakers offer their impressions of the past, present and future of the land they call home in this anthology. Coordinated by Tom Tykwer, Deutschland 09, 13 kurze Filme zur Lage der Nation is comprised of thirteen twelve-minute films, each from a different director and each focusing on an individual aspect of Germany's political and social reality, spanning the six decades that encompassed World War II, the post-war "Economic Miracle," the tumult of the 1960's, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the reunification of the two Germanys, and the new era of reform that emerged in the 21st Century. Featuring both dramatic and documentary segments and running the gamut from comic sketches to a fictive conversation between Susan Sontag and radical terrorist Ulrike Meinhof, Deutschland 09, 13 kurze Filme zur Lage der Nation includes contributions from Fatih Akin, Wolfgang Becker, Sylke Enders, Dominik Graf, Martin Gressmann, Christoph Hochhäusler, Romuald Karmakar, Nicolette Krebitz, Dani Levy, Angela Schanelec, Hans Steinbichler, Isabelle Stever and Hans Weingartner as well as Tom Tykwer. Nejat seems disapproving about his widower father Ali's choice of prostitute Yeter for a live-in girlfriend. But he grows fond of her when he discovers she sends money home to Turkey for her daughter's university studies. Yeter's sudden death distances father and son. Nejat travels to Istanbul to search for Yeter's daughter Ayten. Political activist Ayten has fled the Turkish police and is already in Germany. She is befriended by a young woman, Lotte, who invites rebellious Ayten to stay in her home, a gesture not particularly pleasing to her conservative mother Susanne. When Ayten is arrested and her asylum plea is denied, she is deported and imprisoned in Turkey. Lotte travels to Turkey,where she gets caught up in the seemingly hopeless situation of freeing Ayten.

Fatih Akin - Crossing the Bridge: The Sound of Istanbul (2005)

A European musician and composer sets out to capture the musical diversity of Istanbul. A lover of experimenting with sound, Alexander Hacke (of the German avantgarde band Einstürzende Neubauten) roams the streets of Istanbul with his mobile recording studio and "magic mike" to assemble an inspired portrait of Turkish music. His voyage leads to the discovery of a broad spectrum ranging from modern electronic, rock and hip-hop to classical "Arabesque". plot Summary:

Cahit is a German Turk at his late 30's. He has given up with his life after his beloved wife's death, and he's living a miserable life right in the core of cocaine and excessive drinking. One night, he semi-intentionally crashes into a wall, and barely survives. At the hospital he's taken to, he meets a girl, Sibel, another German Turk who's tried to commit suicide. She's sick and tired of her family's ultra-traditional issues, and asks Cahit to carry out a white marriage with her out of the blue, so that she can become a married woman and get rid of her family's revolting pressure. Cahit is turned off by the idea at first, but then he agrees to take part in this plan. As Sibel tells him straightaway that she's interested in absolute freedom involving other men and he agrees, they live as roommates with separate private lives for a while. Then things take a different turn, and they're no longer two indifferent roommates. But their love story won't be anywhere as simple as any other...

At every film festival there's always one film that's light years ahead of the competition. A true gem that in shocks you, makes you laugh and moves you. A few days later the pictures and words keep reappearing in your mind - a sign that what you have seen has really and truly affected you. It is heartening when these films then get the recognition they deserve, and at this year's Berlinale it was Gegen Die Wand (Head On) that justly won the Golden Bear, the first time in 18 years that a German film has done so.

Idil Üner - Die Liebenden vom Hotel von Osman (2001)

Here in THE LOVERS OF HOTEL..., Fatih Akin takes a break from directing to play the male lead, while the female lover, Idil Ülner, acts and directs. Interestingly, she has played lead female roles in three of Akin's best-known full length features (all part of this 12 film exhibition): Short Sharp Shock (1999), Dealer (1999) and In July (2000) - using the International English titles of these German language films. Add to all this, Akin's Golden Bear Award at the 2004 Berlin Film Festival for his latest film, and this documentary has great appeal beyond its subject matter.

Be that as it may, the subject matter is indeed fascinating and very well developed during the 14 minute duration. This film plays with many stereotypes, and addresses different manifestations of love and jealousy, including the lovers' affection for Istanbul and Berlin both. This is definitely one of the best German-Turkish (or is it Turkish-German?) documentaries I've seen. I recommend it highly to all, especially since the essential theme will appeal to most of us, apart from the German Turkish identity issue, and Akin's emergence as one of the major German language film makers of his generation.

Fatih Akin - Soul Kitchen (2009)

A low-budget restaurateur finds himself in a big vat of trouble in this comedy from director Fatih Akin. Zinos Kazantzakis (Adam Bousdoukos) run a cheap restaurant in a run-down warehouse distract that he calls the Soul Kitchen. While the food isn't very good, it doesn't cost much and a regular clientele shows up each evening for cheap beer, filling food and the company of their peers. Bad luck follows Zinos like a shadow, and when his girlfriend Nadine (Pheline Roggan) runs off to China, he decides to follow, putting his brother (Moritz Bleibtreu) in charge of the restaurant. However, his brother is a convicted criminal, and before long the city's underworld have taken over the place and tax collectors are threatening to shut them down. Zinos returns after Nadine pledges her heart to another, and discovers his diner is a shambles; hoping to put the Soul Kitchen back on its feet, Zinos hires a flashy gourmet chef (Birol Unel) to revamp the menu, but soon he's alienated her old customers while new ones haven't taken their place. Soul Kitchen received its North American premiere at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival.
