Patrick Tam - Ai sha AKA Love Massacre (1981)

Quote:
LOVE MASSACRE
(1981, Hong Kong) Directed by Patrick Tam

Set in a surprisingly minimalist San Francisco, Patrick Tam's stylish slasher movie manages to evoke both Antonioni and Mario Bava in this tale of a ravishing young co-ed (Brigitte Lin) whose studly boyfriend (Chang Kuo-chu) turns into a demented stalker after the suicide of his sister.

Johnny To - Fong juk aka Exiled (2006)

http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/Herzog_V/Exiled_01.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Acclaimed Hong Kong filmmaker Johnny To returns to the characters of his international success The Mission (aka Chueng Fo) with this action-packed thriller. It's 1998, and the Portuguese colony of Macau, a city along the Southern coast of China, is about to be handed over to Chinese authorities under a long-standing agreement. As the people of Macau ponder how their new leaders will deal with the criminal underground that's long been part of the city's support system, a pair of hit men from Hong Kong arrive in town to execute a gangster who has turned his back on the syndicate to make a new life for his wife and children. While the Chinese syndicate want to be sure he doesn't share anything he learned while in their employ, two strong-arm men also arrive in Macau, determined to see to the former gangster's safety. Starring Nick Cheung, Simon Yam and Francis Ng, Exiled received its world premiere at the 2006 Venice Film Festival.

二十四城记/二十四城記 Er shi si cheng ji (24 City)

Among the so-called Sixth Generation of Chinese filmmakers Jia Zhang ke absolutely is my favorite director and storyteller of ‘ordinary’ Chinese citizens compelling stories, told in what I can call very-realistic style no matter if story is real-life or fiction, or if film is documentary, fiction or a mix of both genres like what happens in 24 City.

It’s very difficult to remain a spectator while watching Jia’s films as characters, story and storytelling technique drag you inside the film quite fast to hold you inside story/ stories until the very last scene where you will feel completely satisfied after visiting the life of some people that exemplifies how China society has changed in the last 50 -or so- years. Using interviewers that we will never see but will hear we will watch amazing performances by actors and non-actors (who tell their real-life story) in what feels and look like monologues with some moments looking directly to camera while others just representing life moments, but all telling their compelling stories that go from how they became factory 420 workers until how the third generation with a more modern lifestyle (very western alike) will live in multi-story buildings with luxury flats at what now is called 24 City and will be built in what used to be factory 420 land.

If you’re familiar with Jia’s films you will recognize the actors from the non-actors as actors have been in many of his films, plus you also have well known actress Joan Chen; but all have great performances, so good that will make you feel and live whatever they’re sharing with you, the viewer.

Have to admit that is not an easy-to-watch style as maybe for some film will look like a series of interviews with people telling some interesting and other not-so-interesting stories; but if you’re familiar with Jia’s films I’m sure you’ll easily grab that film is a lot more than style. So, if you are not familiar with director’s work I strongly suggest you watch some of his films before watching this one, like for example Still Life, Platform or Unknown Pleasures.

I loved the film as a very human tale of China’s transition from a very controlled society to a ‘less-controlled’ society, a change that is happening so fast that learning about it (in films and/or real-life news) will amaze you. Not long ago I was reading about how in 10 years China built a comprehensive (and very modern) infrastructure and how now their efforts will be addressed to create a very-comprehensive ‘human infrastructure’. I feel Jia’s 24 City documents how China was able to address physic infrastructure while not taking much care about ‘human infrastructure’ and imagine that in 10 or so years maybe Jia could tell how the ‘human infrastructure’ was developed. Be sure that if he does I’ll be looking forward to watch his film as a learning experience but most of all as a visual and narrative very complete cinematic experience.

Enjoy!!!

Tun Fei Mou - Hei tai yang Nan Jing da tu sha AKA Black Sun: The Nanking Massacre (1995)

http://i.imgur.com/gmV46.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Quote:
In 1937, Japanese troops raid the Chinese city of Nanking to execute a planned massacre by subjecting over 300,000 helpless civilians to various tortures and atrocities before slaughtering them all.

It's not often you hear about the Japanese atrocities committed against the Chinese. Black Sun : The Nanking Massacre unflinchingly tells the true story of the over 300,000(that's 300,000!!!!) Chinese people who were brutally killed by the occupying Japanese army. Mixed with real film footage and photographs of the actual events, the film really shows the atrocities of war. It's mostly told from the Japanese point of view, and several conversations between Japanese commanders and soldiers are chilling. There are some exploitative gross out moments, like an unborn baby being pulled out of a pregnant woman's stomach via bayonette...but it always feels true. There are so many scenes of crowds being machine gunned down that you can be desensitized pretty early on in the film. The scary thing is, is the Japanese really WERE this barbaric. They slaughtered babies, infants, children, women, men and monks alike. The scene of hundreds of bodies being burned on the beach is a truly haunting moment. An absolute must see for war film fans or historians...

Cheh Chang - Ma yong zhen aka The Boxer from Shantung (1972)

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Description: The Boxer From Shan Tung (1972) is a rags to riches story about a country bumpkin who aspires to become the greatest gangster of his era. Ma Yong Zhen makes a name for himself from the ground up by getting the poor and the down trodden to become a part of his "empire". But like all fast rising gangsters they have to fall sometime. The battle in the Tea House has to be the single greatest piece of action film-making I have ever seen. The usual Shaw Brothers players can be found in this two hour plus epic of bloodletting proportions. Kuan Tai Chen stars as Ma Yong Zhen. As usual he makes a great lead actor. He always sports a smile and never let his personal situations bring him down. Kuan also makes a credible butt kicking fighter. David Chiang has an extended cameo as Tan Si, a fellow gangster who becomes a mentor/friend to Ma. Feng Ku co-stars as one of the 4 Champions of Shan Tung, Wang Chung and Hark-On Fung have small roles as Tan Si's henchmen. Ching Li co-stars as the Tea House singer who falls for the mack-daddy charm of Ma Yong Zhen.

Check out the remastered print from Celestial Films. Not only is the film restored to it's original running time but the picture is in pristine condition and the English subs are excellent. Get ready for some action packed, bone crunching excitement!! Another winner from Chang Cheh and the Shaw Brothers!

Highest recommendation possible.

Johnny To - Hak se wui yi wo wai kwai AKA Election 2 (2006)

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i102/wickdclown/el060403128_4a7d5a1419fb7cbce905a4f.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Description: It has been two years since Lok (Simon Yam) quite literally beat Big D to head the Wo Sing triad, and now is the time for another round of elections. The two-year term cannot satisfy Lok's greed for power, and he attempts to violate the gang's rules and seek a second term. Nick Cheung and Gordon Lam return as the Wo Sing members who have also shown interest in the chairman's seat, while Lam Suet and Eddie Cheung are triads who seem content with what they have. Jimmy (Louis Koo), the up-and-coming triad entrepreneur is too involved in his pirate VCD business to run for office. But the influential Uncles, led by Deng (Wong Tin Lam), want to groom him, and Jimmy soon finds out that chairman status is essential for expanding his business on the Mainland.

In Election 2, Johnnie To has made his political references even more explicit than in the first film. Those who have stayed in touch with Hong Kong's political news will find much amusement in the film's denouement. But even those who have not will find much to delight them in To's sharp and witty observations on Hong Kong's election system.

Ho Yim - Wo ai chu fang aka Kitchen (1997)

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Synopsis:
Yim Ho's adaptation of Banana Yoshimoto's best-seller. Aggie (Yasuko Tomita) is a beautiful young woman who completely withdraws from the world following the death of her grandmother. When Louie (Jordan Chan) invites Aggie to move in with him and his mother (Law Kar Ying), she gradually begins to regain her lust for life.

LoveHKfilm Review (by Kozo):
Affecting but extremely different adaptation of Banana Yoshimoto's Kitchen. Those who love the book may be put off, but others may find themselves enchanted by Yim Ho's radical vision.

Inkpot Review (by Jeffery Chen):
In terms of perspectives, Yim tries to provide answers (which in this film, he does) rather then indulge in the dark pit of self-imposed depression. He has presented to us a sincere and poetic film which is small in scale but large in thematic content, dealing with the heavy theme of life and death with light-heartedness and quirky humour. Truly, it is an ode to the power of human love in healing the soul in the midst of utmost loss and despair.

Ringo Lam - Xue xiao feng yun aka School on Fire (1989)

http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/3930/schoolfireun0.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

A gritty and extremely efficient school-set drama by HK action master Ringo Lam, the third from the fire series (City on Fire, Prison on Fire).

Chu Yuen-Fong (Fennie Yuen) witnesses a triad beating and amidst tons of pressure from cops (Lam Ching-Ying and Tommy Wong) and her teacher (Damian Lau), she reports it. However, young triad boss Brother Smart (Roy Cheung) gets annoyed and terrorizes her into paying a HK$30,000 legal fee. It's really just protection money, and things can only get worse from there. Tension grows, events escalate, and IT ALL GOES TO HELL. Ringo Lam handles everything in trademark gritty fashion, and the results will either glue you to the screen or have you hiding your eyes in discomfort. (source : loveHKfilm.com)

Zhang Ke Jia - Zhantai AKA Platform (2000)

http://img243.imageshack.us/img243/1841/platformmj4.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

J. Hoberman @ Village Voice wrote:

One of the richest films of the past decade, Jia Zhangke's three-hour epic Platform spans the 1980s, filtering the period through the mutation of the propaganda-performing Fenyang Peasant Culture Group into the equally cheesy All Star Rock and Breakdance Electronic Band. Jia has a strong visual style (based on long fixed-camera ensemble takes) and a powerful set of concerns (the spiritual confusion of contemporary China, caught between the outmoded materialism of the Maoist era and its market-driven successor). Elliptical yet concrete, Platform is a laconic tale of lackadaisical love and even more haphazard entertainment, as played out in a series of unheated factory halls and outdoor courtyards.

The environment is at once prison-like and vast; with its objective viewpoint and lovingly bleak locations, Platform looks like a documentary, but it's Pop Art as history. Perhaps influenced by Hou Hsiao-hsien's The Puppetmaster, Jia finds subtle ways to transform the world into a stage. The play of the proscenium against the filmmaker's taste for unmediated reality is fascinating. The penultimate image, held long enough for the full weight of quotidian despair to infect the audience, epitomizes the odyssey from kindergarten collectivity to failed privatization.
