Howard Hawks - To Have and Have Not (1944)

Having once cornered Humphrey Bogart in a Casablanca café and beheld his tremendous potential in that sultry and colorful spot, it was logical that the Warners should have wanted to get him there again—or in some place of similar nature, where the currents would flow much the same. A fellow like Mr. Bogart needs a well-coupled circuit, you know. Well, the desire has been accomplished with surprisingly comparable effect in Howard Hawks's production for that studio, To Have and Have Not, which came to the Hollywood yesterday.

Maybe they say that the story is based on Ernest Hemingway's tale of the same name, and maybe the locale is visually French Martinique four years ago. But there's no use dodging around it: To Have and Have Not is Casablanca moved west into the somewhat less hectic Caribbean but along the same basic parallel. And, although there are surface alterations in some of the characters, you will meet here substantially the same people as in that other geo-political romance.

For what Mr. Hawks and his scriptwriters have done to Mr. Hemingway's tale is to shape it out of all recognition into a pattern of worldly intrigue. Now the professional sports fisherman, who was a brute in the original, is a much more tractable fellow where human destinies are involved and especially is he open to persuasion when a fascinating female waves in. And thus, while pursuing his profession in the region of Martinique, he is coerced to fish in the deep waters of pro- and anti-Vichy lawlessness by the push of his own moral suasion and the lure of a very fetching girl.

There is much more character than story in the telling of this tough and tight-lipped tale, and much more atmosphere than action of the usual muscular sort. And that—as was true with Casablanca—is generally just as well. For Mr. Bogart is best when his nature is permitted to smoulder in the gloom and his impulse to movement is restricted by a caution bred of cynical doubt. And those are his dispositions which Mr. Hawks has chiefly worked on in this film. As the hard-boiled professional fisherman who gives his ample ingenuity to a cause, Mr. Bogart is almost as impressive as he was as Rick, the Casablanca host.

And as the wistful bird of passage who moves dauntlessly into his life, Lauren Bacall, a blondish newcomer, is plainly a girl with whom to cope. Slumberous of eye and softly reedy along the lines of Veronica Lake, she acts in the quiet way of catnip and sings a song from deep down in her throat. Accompanied by Hoagy Carmichael, who plays a sweetly sleazy pianist in this film, she mumbles a song of his composing, "How Little We Know," in perfect low-down barroom style. Mr. Carmichael himself also does grandly by a sort of calypso song, which is strictly in keeping with the rambling and melancholy atmosphere.

Dan Seymour is powerfully sinister as a hyperthyroid gunman for Vichy and Walter Brennan gives an affecting performance (albeit pointless) as a drunk. A good many other ratty characters move in and out of the film—apparently the ones who kept on going when they passed through Casablanca some time back.

Howard Hawks - Red River (1948)

http://i16.tinypic.com/63tp64m.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Description: In his first collaboration with John Wayne, Howard Hawks examines capitalism and dueling masculinities in the rousing context of a Western cattle drive. A Mutiny on the Bounty for Big Sky country, Red River features a challenge between Montgomery Clift's Matthew Garth and Wayne's Tom Dunson that becomes a contest between new and old models of Western manhood -- a clash enhanced by the different performance styles of ambiguous, Method-acting, proto-rebel Clift and stolidly imposing star Wayne. Young and adaptable, Garth sees the necessity of finding new markets and cooperating with a community, including such potential adversaries as John Ireland's gun-loving Cherry, while Dunson's Old West individualism becomes an inflexible, economically ruinous monomania. The unsympathetic Dunson challenged the traditional Wayne persona, presaging the disturbed Western heroes that proliferated in the 1950s and 1960s, including Wayne's later role as psychotic Ethan Edwards in John Ford's The Searchers (1956) and in the films that Red River writer Borden Chase wrote for director Anthony Mann. Powered by Russell Harlan's dynamic yet moody black-and-white cinematography and Dimitri Tiomkin's score, Red River became a substantial hit, confirming Clift's star quality in his film debut and earning Oscar nominations for Chase and action editor Christian Nyby; it still stands as one of Hawks's top Westerns.

Howard Hawks - Barbary Coast (1935)

http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/3435/barbarycoastdvdcover.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

from allmovie:
It's the wild and woolly waterfront world of San Francisco in the late 1800s in this rambling tale of an outrageous nightclub owner (Edward G. Robinson) and his efforts at wooing lovely Mary Rutledge (Miriam Hopkins), a lovely Eastern lass left to her own devices in the rowdy port city. The innocent babe loses that innocence when she becomes a kept lady, running the roulette wheel in Robinson's nightclub. The plot matures when Mary falls in love with an honest and upright gold miner. When the lovers are discovered during a fateful tryst, they flee the evil Robinson, hoping to escape as stowaways aboard a departing ship. Robinson is magnificent in this ruffian role.

Howard Hawks - Come and Get It (1936)

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Wisconsin lumberman Barney Glasgow (Edward Arnold) makes his fortune by marrying his business associate's daughter to cinch a lucrative partnership, thereby sacrificing the one he truly loves, Lotta Morgan (Frances Farmer). Lotta marries Barney's close pal Swan Bostrom (Walter Brennan) and they beget Lotta Bostrom (also Frances Farmer) who bears a striking resemblance to her mother. Years later, when the elder Lotta is no longer with us, Barney and his son (Joel McCrea) both fall for the young Lotta, causing Barney to work out his troubling sense of loss. This rousing loggers melodrama was the one and only true showcase for the talents of Frances Farmer, who is superb in the dual role of the mother and daughter Lottas (and for a fledgling actor, that's a lotta Lottas), and who would later be made more famous by the biopics based on her life. Co-directed by Howard Hawks (who discovered Farmer, and was ousted from the film when he was rude to producer Samuel Goldwyn) and William Wyler. --Jim Gay

This is one of Howard Hawks' rarer films from the 1930s. It's actually quite fantastic and unfairly neglected.

quote:
In 1916, somewhere in the front in France in World War I, the 5th Company in the 2nd Battalion of the 39th Regiment created by Napoleon Bonaparte and leaded by the tough Captain Paul La Roche receives among the replacements, Lieutenant Michel Denet and private Moran. When Lt. Denet meets the nurse Monique La Coste, who is Capt. La Roche's mistress but he doe not know, they fall in love for each other. When Capt. La Roche sees the old Pvt. Moran in his inspection, he identifies his father using a fake identity. Meanwhile, the 39th Regiment receives order to go to the trenches, attack the German lines and install a telephone in the front to guide the artillery.

Howard Hawks - Tiger Shark (1932)

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3iU0TGOX_trr5yTutTs04QrbuCeC0WuRjFI3i2CuV6_T9uQestNRyhBFxVVoxqsc44FypdVQWbw03uBgp3f6FtseFRmUWznWCdJYxRywDSJD4wf-KK6p-l_lZMzmq6VtcaoKQOxSEfyIy/s400/tiger_shark.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Crusty, lonely fisherman Edward G. Robinson (in a "Portuguese" accent) falls in love with a young woman. That was his first mistake.

All Movie Guide wrote:
Legend has it that director Howard Hawks filmed Tiger Shark for Warner Brothers while on a fishing trip in Hawaii. Despite the off-handed nature of the production, the film -- based on the play, They Knew What They Wanted -- still manages to touch upon many of Hawks' signature themes. There's a morally complex love triangle, an examination of trust and loyalty, and the impending doom of an outside instrument of death (the sharks). Tiger Shark's driving story line is delivered in a typically Hawksian, no-nonsense style; the fishing scenes are highly charged and very realistic, significant for a film made in the 1930s. Two years after his breakthrough role in Little Caesar (1930), Edward G. Robinson proves his versatility as the Portuguese tuna boat skipper with a bitter, resentful side. -- Brendon Hanley
