Hsiao-hsien Hou - Hai shang hua aka Flowers of Shanghai (1998)

http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/3033/flowersofshanghaitb0.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Description: Shanghai, the 1880s, four elegant brothels (flower houses): each has an auntie (the madam), a courtesan in her prime, older servants, and maturing girls in training. The men gather around tables of food, playing drinking games. An opium pipe is at hand. The women live within dark-paneled walls. The atmosphere is stifling, as if Chekov was in China. The melancholy Wang is Crimson's patron; will he leave her for the younger Jasmin? Emerald schemes to buy her freedom, aided by Luo, a patron. Pearl, an aging flower, schools the willful Jade, who thinks she has a marriage agreement with young master Zhu. Is she dreaming? Women fade, or connive, or despair.

Hsiao-hsien Hou - Dongdong De Jiaqi AKA A Summer at Grandpa's (1984)

http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/5800/asummeratgrandpasbr4.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

"Taiwanese filmmaker Hou Hsiao-hsien (A Time to Live and a Time to Die) emerged as a major new talent of the 80s, and this lyrical childhood remembrance shows you why. A young boy and his sister spend a summer at their grandparents' house in the country while their mother recuperates from an illness; they while away the hours climbing trees, swimming in a stream, searching for missing cattle, and coming to uneasy grips with the enigmatic and sometimes threatening realities of adult life. The fine, unsentimental attention to childhood incident, as well as the vignettish formal structure, recalls the work of Japan's Hiroshi Shimizu, a child-genre specialist of the 30s and 40s whose Four Seasons of Children this film closely resembles, though Hou's social concerns run deeper, and his spare, contemplative styling--the precise formal center around which a world accumulates--sets him squarely among the modernists. There's a slight sense of drift toward the end, as if Hou's personal, long-take certainty had momentarily deserted him, but otherwise it's a remarkably assured effort."

Hsiao-hsien Hou - Fengkuei-lai-te jen AKA The Boys from Fengkuei (1983)

http://www.haixia.com/uploads/090723/17_093528_1.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Hou's first indie production was also a creative breakthrough, the film in which he turned away from commercial formulas and began experimenting with long takes, wide-angle shots and melodrama-free plotlines. Three young men from Fengkuei, a backwater village in the Penghu Islands, decamp to Kaohsiung, Taiwan's southern port, for what they think will be a life of laddish fun; like Fellini's Vitelloni, they are pushed towards maturity by encounters with crime, death, work and women. Hou soon went far beyond these rather obvious social and psychological observations, but the film retains a real freshness and charm; it launched several acting careers.

Hsiao-hsien Hou - Niluohe nuer AKA Daughter of the Nile (1987)

http://a.imagehost.org/0974/vlcsnap-712034.png

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Description: Daughter of the Nile (1987) is an anomaly of sorts in Hou’s filmography considering the direction his films have hitherto been moving in. The film’s begins like a Markerian tone poem, especially resembling Level Five (1997), establishing a strange connection between Taiwan and ancient Egypt, and goes on to unfold as a Tsai-esque poem about physical and emotional loneliness in a pre-apocalyptic world. Ah-Sang (Fan Yang) is a college-going young woman living with her sister, a school going teenager, her brother, a lifelong thief, now escalating the ladders of the mafia and her grandfather. Ah-Sang tries to find some happiness in the relationships with her family and friends, but is continually hampered by the ever-increasing brutality of the world around her. She tries to escape the bleakness by imagining herself as Carol, a manga character who leaves her family and flees to ancient Egypt only to be killed at 22. The greenery and serenity of the countryside, which had till now played a significant part in Hou’s films, is completely absent as Hou replaces it with saturated primary colours exuded by the luminous advertisements of nighttime Taipei. The spacious and airy interiors of previous films give way to cramped, suffocating rooms. Surely, Ah-Sang is no better than the fish in the tank in her apartment. Even amidst this desolation, she remains hopeful of a meaningful relationship with one of her brother’s mafia friends, only to be disappointed later. These are, truly, victims of the neon god.

Olivier Assayas - Cinéma, de notre temps: HHH - Un portrait de Hou Hsiao-Hsien (1997)

http://i40.tinypic.com/qwzzhf.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Description: "The acclaimed filmmaker of the masterpiece Flowers of Shanghai, Hou Hsiao-hsien has been called "the figure of the decade" by critics such as J. Hoberman and Amy Taubin, and is considered by many to be the greatest Taiwanese filmmaker of all time.

Does he consider himself a Taiwanese or a Chinese film director? Examining the questions of identity and "native land," Hou Hsiao-hsien returns to the setting of his youth to talk to childhood friends and discuss his films. His work, like the films A Time to Live and a Time to Die (1985) and The Puppetmaster (1993), is inseparably linked with the recent history of Taiwan, and to his own evolution.

Hou Hsiao-hsien's generation was born in Taiwan, or at a young age immigrated there, after the liberalization of the government following the 1975 death of Chiang Kai-shek. It is to this generation that the question of a Taiwanese identity is posed.

Hou Hsiao-hsien's body of work, and the emergence of the Taiwanese 'Nouvelle Vague,' must be located within the context of an intellectual movement that united Taiwanese writers, journalists and filmmakers at the end of the 1970's. This movement became possible only with the end of censorship, a prerequisite for free discussions, through film and literature, about Taiwan's society.

Olivier Assayas, the director of HHH - A PORTRAIT OF HOU HSIAO-HSIEN, whose most recent film Demonlover has just been released, was an early champion of the now world-renowned Hou Hsiao-hsien. Like many of the filmmakers from the generation before him, Assayas began his career as a film critic for Cahiers du Cinema. A film fanatic, he was instrumental in dissecting such genres as American Horror, Hong Kong Cinema and the new Tiawanese cinema. After writing screenplays for fellow Cahiers critic Andre Techine, Assayas pursued his own directing career, most notably with Irma Vep."

In HHH - A PORTRAIT OF HOU HSIAO-HSIEN, another installment in the Cinema, Of Our Time series (distributed by First Run / Icarus Films), two equals discuss the art of filmmaking.

"The 21st century belongs to Asia, and Hou is its historian, its prophet, and its poet laureate."—Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader

"Highly recommended for inclusion in film and popular culture studies collections, this video provides a fascinating look at both an industry and an individual."—Educational Media Reviews Online

"A successful work. This is extremely valuable information that should interest not only critics and fans of Hou's films, but also film historians who wish to trace the development of Taiwanese cinema or find patterns shared by independent filmmaking with distinctive regional or national identities. [The film] helps us understand the autobiographical elements in... his early films, as well as the melancholy yearning, hidden beneath the childhood innocence, for a home and nation forever lost."—Professor Gang Gary Xu, University of Illinois at Urbana, for the Asian Educational Media Services 'News and Reviews' "

Hsiao-hsien Hou - Xi meng ren sheng aka The Puppetmaster (1993)

http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/411/229poster1.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Description: Hou Hsiao-hsien's masterpiece about the childhood and early adulthood of octogenerian Taiwanese puppet master and actor Li Tien-lu. This is the second part of a trilogy about Taiwanese life in the 20th century, covering all but the first few years of the Japanese occupation of Taiwan (1895-1945). Hou's preference for filming entire scenes in long takes from fixed camera angles and for eschewing close-ups has never been as masterfully employed and modulated as it is here--some of the landscape shots are breathtaking. The film alternates between re-created scenes from Li's life, Li speaking directly to the camera about his past, and extracts from his puppet and stage performances, creating a layered density in the narrative that does full justice to the complexity and poetry of Hou's investigation

The second installment of Hou Hsiao-Hsien's historical trilogy (which also includes A CITY OF SADNESS and GOOD MEN, GOOD WOMEN), THE PUPPETMASTER is based on the life of famed Chinese puppet master Li Tien-Lu. Spanning the years 1909 to 1945 and covering major historical events in China's occupation by the Japanese, the film is epic in scope, yet highly personal in focus. Influenced by Chinese painting and the aesthetic concept of "liu-pai" (the idea that what is visible within the frame can open the mind to the world that extends beyond its parameters), the PUPPETMASTER is visually stunning.

Hsiao-hsien Hou - Kôhî jikô aka Café Lumière (2003)

http://gi71.photobucket.com/groups/i133/8O96UBCFGZ/CffeLmr.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Description:
Café Lumière is a film directed by Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-Hsien for Shochiku as homage to Yasujiro Ozu, with direct reference to the late master's Tokyo Story (1953). It premiered at a festival commemorating the centenary of Ozu's birth. Many critics hailed the film reminiscent of Ozu's works as an artistically significant step for Hou, and it was nominated for a Golden Lion at the 2004 Venice Film Festival.

The story revolves around a young Japanese woman (played by Yo Hitoto) doing research on Taiwanese composer Jiang Wen-Ye, whose work is featured on the soundtrack. The late composer's Japanese wife and daughter also make appearances as themselves.

Hsiao-hsien Hou - Lian lian feng chen AKA Dust in the Wind (1986)

http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/169/dustinthewind9xh.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Quote:

Dust in the Wind is a remarkable film, and one which will, no doubt, reward multiple viewings. Like most of the films of Hou Hsiao Hsien, viewers will be divided into two, sharply opposed camps.

The main characters in the film are two high-school students. The first is Wan, who - seeing his village as a dead-end career-wise, decides to leave their home town to go to Taipei to find work, intending to complete his education via night-school. His girlfriend Huen also leaves for Taipei after graduation. The other personages are family members, employers, friends and co-workers.

The story presented consists of a number of vignettes in typical Hou fashion, with stationary camera and naturalistic performances. Glimpses are given of their occupations, their moments together and their times apart. Though varying from the very funny to the emotionally raw, they have a cumulative effect, resonating with a reality that is not idealised, and is yet still filled with moments of sublime grace, somehow existing with situations of despair, misery, boredom and loss. There is little music, only a solitary guitar used to punctuate scenes, almost like a musical interlude, often combined with stunning scenery.

Apart from the immediate plot, something can also be glimpsed of the attitudes of the rural, native Taiwanese towards the city and the higher classes, as well as to the vicissitudes of life in general. On a whole the film seems imbued with the melancholy, fatalistic philosophy indicated by its title.

A worthy member of Hou's inimitable body of films, 'Dust in the Wind' was touching and memorable, though with an absence of schmaltz. It is a film I hope to revisit soon. As for recommendations, I'm not sure that it will be everyone's 'cup of tea'. Some will find many of its aspects, in particular its detachedness, quite alienating. Certainly those already familiar with Hou, or fans of Taiwanese cinema in general, will want to see it. Those who like Ozu, Bresson or Tarkovsky may find it worthwhile also. There is the same naturalistic feel, understated acting and long takes. But it is also very much the work of an original auteur who is honing his craft and producing unique, personal films.
