Plot Outline :
Bob, a middle-aged gambler and thief, plans a complicated heist. He deals with a number of underworld characters while planning the robbery of the Deauville Casino. Bob eventually hires a gang that includes an ace safecracker. Unfortunately for them, Bob's nemesis, an old cop who Bob once saved from death, is tipped off after a money-hungry croupier's wife betrays them. The police are waiting when the gang begins the seemingly impossible task of robbing the casino vault. Meanwhile in the casino, Bob starts to gamble.

Jean-Pierre Melville - Leon Morin, pretre aka The Forgiven Sinner (1961)

How many other directors could handle with great deftness the innuendoes of this potentially, sexually explosive relationship between an attractive and problematic widow with a young daughter (Emmanuelle) and a handsome 26-year-old priest (Belmondo), during the German Occupation of a small French town?

Melville establishes his exquisite control of the subject matter by allowing the story to unfold in such a perfect manner. I suspect, not many directors have that kind of grace and understanding of life... Melville's sense of how to tell a story has influenced many directors through his long career starting in the late 40s, and that list would include the great director, Bresson, who developed the same style and feel for filmmaking as Melville, who at times outdoes Melville's Melville, giving some the false impression that Melville imitated Bresson.

Plot Summary:

Maurice Faugel has just been released from prison when he kills his friend Gilbert Varnove. Maurice then attempts to commit a robbery. The police appear and he tries to run but the police shoot at him and he is wounded. He looses consciousness and awakes in his friend Jean's apartment. He believes that his friend Silien told the police about his plans because Silien is rumoured to be a police informant.

Silien is questioned by the police about the murder of Gilbert and the robbery before the police collect Maurice from a bar where he is reading a newspaper report about his girlfriend, Therese's death. Therese has been found in her car at the bottom of a quarry. Silien is released and goes to meet his ex-girlfriend Fabienne.

With Fabienne's help, Silien frames someone else for the murder and robbery, leaving Maurice in the clear. Maurice is released from prison and discovers that it was Therese who told the police about the robbery and Silien and Jean who killed her. Maurice reveals that he killed Gilbert because Gilbert killed his girlfriend Arlette four years ago to keep her quiet. Silien returns home but once Silien has left, Maurice remembers that he hired a man to kill Silien because he thought he had betrayed him and chases after him.

Jean-Pierre Melville - Le silence de la Mer aka The Silence of the Sea (1949)

Melville's extraordinary first feature, an adaptation of Vercors' classic novella about the French Resistance, is in effect a triangular drama in which two people don't speak. A German officer (Vernon), convalescing from a wound, is billeted on an elderly Frenchman (Robain) and his niece (Stéphane). Respecting their obstinate refusal to address the hated invader, he meets their silence with a series of monologues, apparently ignored, in which he recalls his life before the war and all the things he values; but what he reveals about himself causes the girl to fall in love, without being able to declare her feelings. Filmed in the most daring way imaginable, using a new cinematic language of transient expressions and glances, the film was a root influence on Bresson and the whole French New Wave.

In an idyllic provincial town of occupied France, two German soldiers come upon the secluded home of an old man (Jean-Marie Robian) and his niece (Nicole Stephane), in search of a boarding house. One evening, a German officer named Werner von Ebrennac (Howard Vernon) introduces himself as the new household tenant. Despite their deliberate silence towards the German stranger, von Ebrennac is respectful and considerate, stopping by the living room to greet the residents before retiring to his room for the evening: admiring their home, sharing the warmth of a fire. Soon, he changes his evening ritual by changing into civilian clothes before visiting them, politely knocking before imposing himself into the company of the old man, smoking his pipe, and his niece, engrossed in knitting. As in Ingmar Bergman's Persona, he fills the silence by speaking casually about his life: his past love, beliefs, literature, music. He reveals that he is a great admirer of French culture, believing that the German occupation is an equitable union of two nations that will contribute to the greatness of Europe, and that France will heal the pervasive cruelty of his country. However, during a highly anticipated trip to Paris, von Ebrennac learns the underlying plans of his compatriots, and is forced to reconcile with his allegiance and culpability.

Jean Pierre Grumbach alias Melville - a so called conservative and admirer of the pre war Amercon film - is now dead a long time. Before his last good bye he made in the time of 25 years just a few films, one French in the US, an unsuccessful one (he exactly knows why), all the rest except part of 'Fercheaux' in France, some in black and white, some later in color and scope. He cultivated a list of 63 American directors, was friend to many new wave directors and Volker Schlöndorf assisted him for Le Doulos. He owned a private Film Studio in the Rue Jenner in Paris an let it to other directors and television productions. That studio burned down totally and the documentary shows Melville in his office talking about the past, the presence and the future and the plan to rebuilt the Rue Jenner Studio he loved so much. The documentary doesn't give all aspects of Melville (how could you possibly manage in 53 minutes), but you watch a man of the 7 th art telling the camera (at nighttime I presume)what is important for him in the very moment the film is made. The man in his private writing laboratory, not the usual Stetson on his head, no police glasses, just the ordinary surrounding of a writer-director, who fights himself from one film to the other and is soon after the documentary was made dead. No more films of Jean Pierre Grumbach, formerly officer in the de Gaulle London army, producer, writer, director of films, when Delon and Belmondo were still young and
Ernie Sch. probably didn't even know what a film studio is at all. Nice to watch him: You can much easier recognize him as an extra for instance in A Bout de Souffle, or opposit of Jean Cocteau in Les Enfants Terrible. A film long before the talk shows came to France. The film should be kept as long as Le samourai, Le Doulos and Le deuxieme souffle are being shown on TV and sometimes on the big screen.
