John Frankenheimer - I Walk the Line (1970)

A married backwoods Tennessee sheriff (Peck) falls in love with a teenager (Weld) whose father is a moonshiner. The sheriff keeps quiet of the illegal whiskey production, making sure his men and federal agents stay clear of the still. When a deputy stumbles upon the liquor production and is killed, the sheriff is too smitten not to aid and become an accomplice. With a few of the earmarks of Frankenheimer the film follows a gentle, yet subtly building, pace. I fear there was a little too much production intrusion with Johnny Cash tunes popping up frequently - assuming, I suppose, his popularity might help ticket sales. Peck is his usual fabulous self, this time as a brooding, uncomfortable adulterer but overall the film doesn't seem to fill all the pieces of the puzzle quite adeptly. Luckily the performances carry the us through and Frankenheimer's still has a few tricks up his sleeve with a unsuspecting finale.

John Frankenheimer - The Iceman Cometh (1973)

Produced as part of the American Film Theater series, which produced films of classic plays with top-shelf actors and directors, this adaptation of Eugene O'Neill's THE ICEMAN COMETH is infused with director Frankenheimer's (THE FRENCH CONNECTION, THE EXORCIST) trademark kinetic style. Set in 1912, the entire film takes place inside a dive bar named The Last Chance Saloon, where its destitute patrons eagerly await the arrival of Hickey, who arrives annually and props everyone up with free drinks and spirited stories of his travels. However, when Hickey does show up this year, it is with a message of temperance and an exhortation to give up hopeless dreams and face reality.

John Frankenheimer - Seven Days in May (1964)

Plot Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Adapted by Rod Serling from the best-selling novel by Fletcher Knebel and Charles Waldo Bailey II, Seven Days in May was allegedly inspired by the far-right ramblings of one General Edwin Walker. Burt Lancaster plays General James M. Scott, who, convinced that liberal President Jordan Lyman (Fredric March) is soft on America's enemies, plots a military takeover of the United States. Every effort made by President Lyman to find concrete evidence of General Scott's scheme is scuttled by political protocol, human error and accidental death. Ultimately, Lyman must rely upon the man who first uncovered the plot: Colonel "Jiggs" Casey (Kirk Douglas). John Frankenheimer's terse direction and Ellsworth Fredericks' stark black and white photography enhance the "docudrama" feel of Seven Days in May.

John Frankenheimer - Birdman of Alcatraz (1962)

GOOD NEWS: This is a riveting film start-to-finish, which is hard to do considering it runs over two hours. Burt Lancaster, one of the better actors, perhaps, of all time, gives a tremendous and very memorable performance. It's a cliché but this IS one story you will not forget!

Director John Frrankenheimer also is one of the best ever. Check out his resume, if you question that last statement. He has some masterful camera shots in here. In addition to the talents of the director and main actor, you have Karl Malden,Thelma Ritter, Telly Savalas and Edmond O'Brien - no slouches they - in solid supporting roles. The DVD also helps highlight the wonderful black-and-white photography.

Most prison stories are bleak and depressing. This one is not. Oh, it has some melodrama and a few tough scenes which include prison violence, but generally it is a fascinating character study....and, even for those of you who are not bird lovers, full of interesting information about our feathered friends. How they trained the birds to do some things in here also is amazing.

John Frankenheimer - The Impossible Object aka Story of a Love Story (1973)

Synopsis:
Story of a Love Story may well be the least-known of John Frankenheimer's films. Filmed in France, the story concerns highly imaginative author Alan Bates. Though happily married, Bates enters into an affair with Dominique Sanda. Somehow, the whole experience seems unreal. Could Sanda be merely a character in one of Bates' novels, conjured up out of boredom? We won't reveal the answer here; let us just offer our congratulations to Frankenheimer for so stylishly breaking away from his standard "message" mode (as exemplified in The Manchurian Candidate and Seven Days in May).
