Synopsis

He starts his own new Church of Truth, without the crucified Jesus, his first disciple being an 18-year old simpleton with a 'prophetic gift'...

John Huston - Reflections in a Golden Eye (1967)

Description: On a U.S. Army post circa 1948, a major who is an impotent, latent homosexual is married to an infantile birdbrain who never misses an opportunity to ridicule his masculine failings. He displaces his hostility by brutally flogging her horse and she retaliates by humiliating him before a houseful of guests, repeatedly slashing him across the face with her riding crop. She is also committing adultery with the officer next door, who's wife cut off her nipples with garden shears after the death of her baby. She has sought solace in the ministrations of her effeminate houseboy. The sixth character, coveted by the major, is a darkly handsome noncom, a voyeur and lingerie-fondler, given to nightly appearances as a peeping tom in the birdbrain's bedroom and daily sessions of horseback riding in the middle of the woods stark naked.

Brief Synopsis
A network of older spies from the West recruits a young intelligence officer with a photographic memory to accompany them on a mission inside Russia. They must recover a letter written by the CIA that promises American assistance to Russia if China gets the atomic bomb.

When American agents in Moscow try to recover a stolen letter implicating America in an anti-Red China plot, they discover a hornet's nest of treason, double agents, murder, and betrayal. The plot has as many switchbacks as a Formula One racetrack, and a pad and paper to keep track of the agents and their code names wouldn't hurt. Still, The Kremlin Letter is an interesting espionage movie with some good performances.

John Huston - The Misfits (1961)

The final film of stars Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe is an elegy for the death of the Old West from writer Arthur Miller and director John Huston. Gable stars as Gay Langland, an aging hand traveling the byways and working at rodeos with his two comrades, Guido (Eli Wallach) and young Perce Howland (Montgomery Clift). The three men come up with a plan to corral some misfit mustangs and sell them for dog food, but Gay's new girlfriend Roslyn Taber (Marilyn Monroe), a high-minded ex-stripper who has just divorced her husband Ray (Kevin McCarthy) in Reno, is appalled by the plan. Although both Guido and Perce are also in love with Roslyn, she stands by Gay, sure that in the end he will do the right thing, even as he and his pals begin their planned roundup. -- Karl Williams

Seldom, if ever, has a movie been in as much synchronicity with the lives of its stars as The Misfits. In fact, director John Huston's gift for casting took a spooky turn in this case. The film, ostensibly about disappearing independence, has mortality seeping from its every pore. It's a haunting and ghostly film about the end of an era that turned out to be the end of an era itself. Most famously, The Misfits was the last movie that two of the biggest screen legends, Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe, would complete. By the early 60s, Monroe was going in and out of hospitals trying to deal with her drug problem and her overwhelming depression. She died of a drug overdose a year and a half after the movie was completed. Gable, reportedly bored with waiting for Monroe on the set, refused to have a stuntman do his stunts (at the age of 59!) and died less than a week after the end of filming for The Misfits. The final tragic story is the one of Montgomery Clift. One of the most supremely talented actors of his generation (in the same style but better than James Dean), Clift goes largely underappreciated today. His withered and languorous performance in The Misfits must have struck very close to home. It's a movie filled with loss, too much of it from outside the film itself. -- Brendon Hanley

John Huston - Fat City (1972)

One of the masterpieces of Hollywood's last golden age, John Huston's Fat City is the kind of film studios wouldn't touch these days: a small-scale character study about unlucky men living on the margins. Set in a rundown California border town, the movie follows the trajectory of Tully (Stacy Keach), a farm laborer whose once-promising boxing career was derailed by booze. Tully's dismal wallow in limbo contrasts with the halting rise of Ernie (Jeff Bridges), a fresh-faced rookie trying to make it big in the low-stakes world of small-time boxing. Graceful, dignified and seemingly effortless, Fat City finds Huston at the top of his game. A model of understatement, it's a movie of indelible, unobtrusive details, like the thick layer of smoke hanging over a dingy boxing arena, or the slouched silhouettes at the local tavern on a lazy afternoon. Laced with empathy, these moments all add up to a fully realized portrait of failure.

John Huston - The MacKintosh Man (1973)

British agent Joseph Reardon is recruited by spymaster Mackintosh to impersonate an Australian criminal and infiltrate a mysterious spy ring in an operation so covert that no one but Mackintosh and his secretary, Mrs. Smith, know the truth. Reardon robs a postman of a diamond shipment and allows himself to be caught and sentenced to 20 years in Chelmsford Prison, where he becomes acquainted with Slade, a notorious traitor serving a life term.
