Affairs Within Walls (1965)
Kabe no naka no himegoto
aka Secret Act Inside Walls aka Skeleton in the Closet
Director:Koji Wakamatsu
1965 Nominated Golden Berlin Bear
Auess:
One of the early masterpiece of japanese Pink Film. Directed and writed by Koji Wakamatsu. The original one has no english sub, just chinese, so I used a translate soft made a simple english sub, that's all I can do.

Roland Domenig, Vital flesh: the mysterious world of Pink Eiga
Koji Wakamatsu is one of the more important directors to have worked in the pink film (pinku eiga), a genre of softcore, dramatically charged films which were dominant on the Japanese domestic scene in the 1960's and 1970's (the roman porn were a more radical and explicit subset of the pink film). The Japanese studios who produced these films, including Nikkatsu, were reluctant to distribute these films abroad, for fear of the sort of image the films would project of Japan. Seeing these films today one must conclude that it was not the more obvious sexual display that worried the Japanese, but the radical anarchist politics of the films, perhaps above all else, often compounded by violent sadomasochism, and the undercurrent of misogyny.

But the star of pink eiga in the 1960s was Koji Wakamatsu. His films combined sex and violence with politics, and hit a nerve with a sexually and politically frustrated (male) youth. In 1965 his film Secrets Behind Walls (Kabe no naka no himegoto) created a scandal in Japan when it was screened at the Berlin Film Festival. The press and the general public regarded the film as a disgrace to Japan and the Japanese film commission unsuccessfully tried to have the film withdrawn from the festival.

David Desser, Eros plus Massacre: An Introduction to the Japanese New Wave Cinema
A contract director for Niikatsu, he [Koji Wakamatsu] directed twenty films in a two-year period, 1963-65. What turned out to be his last film for the company [Secret Act Inside Walls, 1965] found Wakamatsu entering the area pioneered by Imamura Shohei and becoming a growing concern for Oshima, the connections between sexuality, identity, and politics.

Midnight Eye
Grandfather of the Japanese sex film Koji Wakamatsu pioneered the pinku genre with films like Skeleton in the Closet (Kabe No Naka No Himegoto, 1965) and Violated Angels (Okasareta Hakui, 1967).

Synopsis
Prolific Japanese filmmaker Koji Wakamatsu's Go, Go Second Time Virgin tells the tale of two Japanese teens brought together by sexual violence, revenge, and rebellion. A girl (Mimi Kozakura) is forcibly carried to a rooftop and gang-raped, as a boy of similar age (Michio Akiyama) stands to the side watching the events unfold. The boy remains on the roof until the next morning, waiting for the girl to wake. When she does finally rise, the two teens begin sharing intimate details about their lives, including the fact that the boy has recently killed four people that forced him to take part in an orgy. As the two kindred spirits sink lower and lower into depression and delusion, they exact revenge for the crimes against the girl and take a bold, tragic step to end their misery once and for all.

Koji Wakamatsu - 17-sai no fukei - shonen wa nani o mita no ka AKA Cycling Chronicles: Landscapes the Boy saw (2004)

http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/5308/pa1060972de8.gif

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Kôji Wakamatsu's Cycling Chronicles: Landscapes the Boy Saw (17-sai no fûkei - shônen wa nani o mita no ka) - a.k.a. "Cycle Chronicles - Landscapes the Boy Saw" and "17 and Life" - is scheduled to have its U.S. première at the 49th San Francisco International Film Festival (SFIFF) on April 27th at 8:45 p.m., and to subsequently be screened there on May 2nd at 6:00 p.m.. As was previously reported here and there on Twitch, the movie was screened at Regional Film Festival (Rîjonaru Firumu Fesutibaru) - "RiFF" for short - on October 31, 2004, and at the 26th PIA Film Festival in Sendai (Dai-26-kai Pia Firumu Fesutibaru in Sendai) - "PFF Sendai" for short - on November 23, 2004. It was released theatrically in Japan by Toshiki Shima's Shima Films on July 30th of last year.

The screenplay for Cycling Chronicles: Landscapes the Boy Saw was written by Shima, Izuru Deguchi, and Takayuki Yamada, based on a story by Wakamatsu that was inspired by a real-life event. The movie stars Tasuku Emoto, art critic Ichirô Hariu (a.k.a. Ichirô Haryû), Etsuko Seki, Kaori Kobayashi, Juri Ihata, Mansaku Fuwa, Yôji Tanaka, Masakatsu Toriyama, and Atsuto Maruyama (given name may be "Atsuhito", etc.).

Here's a description of Cycling Chronicles: Landscapes the Boy Saw from the SFIFF website: "Known mainly for his 'pink' films - low-budget erotic productions - outspoken veteran filmmaker Koji Wakamatsu delivers a surprisingly lyrical yet piercing critique of Japanese society and history in Cycling Chronicles. Wakamatsu has long been driven by a sense of political and social outrage, and a sympathy for those who have been marginalized or suppressed by dominant history and institutions. Inspired by a true story of a teenager who killed his mother and then cycled aimlessly from Tokyo to Aomori, Wakamatsu shows his protagonist (a largely wordless, engaging performance by youngster Emoto) biking through beautiful landscapes but discovering the ugly side of Japanese history as he is propelled towards his own catharsis. In mostly improvised scenes, Emoto meets a series of older citizens with deep and sometimes shocking experiences to recount: fishermen forced by government regulations to operate outside the law to survive; an elderly Korean who was brought to Japan as a comfort woman and then abandoned by her husband. Perhaps the most powerful encounter is with an old man remembering his dead brother, a Japanese soldier who was a war prisoner in Mongolia, while condemning the atrocities perpetrated by Japan during the war and questioning current geopolitical issues. Few Japanese filmmakers today are prepared to confront so directly the past that continues to shadow Japan's relations with her neighbors, and fewer still are willing to explain how the dysfunctions and violence in Japanese society can be traced to these highways and byways of Japanese history. Wakamatsu is one of those very few."

Koji Wakamatsu - Otoko goroshi onna goroshi: hadaka no zyudan (1969)

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Description: Welcome in the underworld, on your left there’s some gangsters, on your right be careful there’s shootings, murders, betrayals… Enjoy the jazzy mood !

Three killers stole money and drugs from a gangsters meeting. They left with a hostage and a lot of dead bodies behind. Well, that’s not a big deal for them, they stay relax, and don’t rush to sell the drugs. After the massacre, they just go back to their flat and spend a good time. Except one of them, who decides otherwise. He’s tired of staying there doing nothing, and so leave with the hostage. Does he want to start his life again or he’s just too ambitious ?

Wakamatsu has already shown the underworld, but until now, it was just a bunch of men living out of the system whose function, was to disturb the story of the prime characters. Gangsters always have a sadistic side, so proud to torture and humiliate others. In this film, the underworld is the prime interest, this is no more a minor thing that interrupts another story. On the contrary, now, this is the gangsters who tried to run away from this world, to humiliate it because they’re fed up ! The robbery at the beginning is a good example, three killers killing easily a bunch of armed gangsters. No pity for them !

The first character (Ken Yoshizawa), a cool killer wearing sunglasses, is the product of the gangsters’ hate and comtempt. In fact, he has a trauma. A long time ago, he was a small thief, he was caught with his girlfriend by yakuzas. He didn’t want to run away from his responsibilities. Too bad, with his girlfriend, they were humiliated in front a handicapped and voyeur chief. To underline the trauma, the scene was shot in colors. In this scene, our killer lost a phalanx and his dignity. His girlfriend has become a prostitute drug-addict. The underworld isn’t glamor, those people are mean and sadistics.

For once, Wakamatsu decides to change the location, why staying inside of a building ? So this time, Wakamatsu shot the city, the modern buildings and the slums (separated by only one street). The changing is quite slow, first we see the habitations of the slums then the cold modernity. In both cases, the first character can’t stay lock in. Each times, he has to get away from these rat-traps. Even after the robbery, he prefers to go outside. It’s a way to discover the city by night and see the dirty streets where poor peoples are trying to survive.

Once the city known, men go to the rural era. To go there, they take train, it goes so fast they can’t even enjoy what they’re seeing ! But, again, they’re locked into a box, waiting to get to their destination. And again, the modernity take apart man from his environment. It’s a necessary problem to discover natural places far from cities.

With this movie, Wakamatsu confirms his interest for violence. Here, all men have a gun they’re using to defend themselves. Meaning, they can kill. This is no more a marginal object, gun becomes something normal. And so, dead bodies. Gangsters don’t belong to the society, they live with their own rules and desires without having any report to do. Nobody’ll come to disturb them, mainly because their answer is the way of the gun. Even inside this world, an outlaw fears only bullets. But maybe, gun can be a way to become free, see the first character.

The cool killer keeps a strange aura, he never gives too much information to other people. For example, he decides to end his friendship with the 2 other killers. He wants to get away from this clan where life is only about murders and money. There’s no human feel, they’re just beast doing their mission the best they can. At one moment, Wakamatsu will show the killers eating chicken, except for our cool killer, he prefers salad (and he’s not weak at all). When they’re eating, they’re like pigs, they’re disgusting ! This scene is funny because even though they have a wild behaviour, their faces are calm and focused. Those killers are heartless, ready to eat even an innocent poor animal !

All this friendship story is the second part of the film, when the 2 killers go looking for their ex-friend traitor. This relation will be inverted in Violence Without A Cause where there’ll be only 1 student left on the 3, story of a friendship destructed by desperation. In this film, it’s not about running away from the group, because without it, the students don’t really exist. Here, the cool killer is trying to find his freedom. He doesn’t want to be part of a small world hypocrite like the society. The final shot feels like an irony (or a tragedy), finally those killers become human slops, victims of their own rules and dreams. They’re brutally bring back to their own reality of selfish and useless men, still dominated by a powerful society. The group can’t give freedom to man, he’s still living under rules made a hypocrite society. Is Wakamatsu saying it’s useless to believe that a group of people can change the society ? I guess so.

Koji Wakamatsu - Gendai sei hanzai zekkyo hen: riyu naki boko aka Violence Without A Cause (1969)

http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/4804/posterha8.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Synopsis
Three poor young university student dropouts, with hardly any money left, hang around and decide to move to countryside Aomori where they stay at one of the boys small appartment. As they wander around the beach they spot a young couple and decide to rape the girl. They all feel rejected by society and try to get out of their state. One of the boys eventually gets a hold of a gun and commits suicide, while the other accidentally finds a gun and shoots at a policeman. The story was probably inspired by the figure of Norio Nagayama, a 19 year old serial killer who was convicted of killing 4 people in a cross-country murder spree in 1968 (see Masao Adachi's movie AKA Serial Killer which is about this figure).
