The film reflects the life of the Macedonian emigrants and migrant workers in Australia. With their going away in far away countries and living abroad, some of them have succeed in socializing, but there are still some of them who always remain with the dilemma of returning in their native country. Through their personal retellings and the metaphor description of their whole way of living in the new surroundings, expressed in a mosaical cinemathographic way, one could get known with the hard work of the Macedonian emigrants; also, the education of their children, as well as the holly celebrations in the church, such as the baptizing, the weddings, but even the funerals either, as unavoidable part of human living.

Svetozar Ristovski - Iluzija AKA Mirage (2004)

'You never get out of the sewer' is the sad summary toward the end of this remarkable film from Macedonia. Director Svetozar Ristovski co-wrote this screenplay with Grace Lea Troje, a story of the struggle of youths in a country devastated with poverty and corruption - a place without hope. The message is grim, the story is brutal, but the impact is stunning.

Marko (twelve-year old Marko Kovacevic in a brilliant debut) lives with his abusive, alcoholic father Lazo (Vlado Jovanovski) whose only work other than drinking is bingo games and who is in defiance of the American occupation of Macedonia; his mute and terrified mother Angja (Elena Mosevska) who remains a pathetic victim of abuse; and his trashy, angry, abusive sister Fanny (Slavica Manaskova) - all of whom hate each other and fill their hovel along the railroad tracks with cruelty. Marko happens to be a fine student who writes poetry and is encouraged by his Bosnian Professor (Mustafa Nadarevic) to write a poem for a competition that would reward him with a trip to Paris. Marko's schoolmates are disgusting thugs who beat him at every provocation: the Professor, fighting his own demons, does little to control his outrageous classroom.

Marko escapes his ugly household by finding a spot on a deserted train where he can be alone and it is here that the movie takes on magic. Marko 'creates' a friend named 'Paris' (Nikola Djuricko) who gives him hope that Marko can come with him as he leaves the little cruel village. Paris teaches him to defend himself and to support himself through stealing and shoplifting, all with the goal of escaping from Macedonia. As Marko slips down the path of crime his teacher tries in vain to feed Marko's hope of writing his way to Paris, but when the gang of boys force Marko to the limit, Marko's new self challenges them, establishing his independence. The two beacons of Hope for Marko (Professor and Paris) both fade and the ending of the film comes as a shocking surprise, yet one that mirrors Nietzsche's astute quotation.

This is a grim film to watch, overflowing with brutality of both the physical and the mental types, but the journey is worth it due to the overwhelmingly fine performance by Marko Kovacevic, a lad with the same degree of quiet facial expressiveness and acting skill as that of such greats as Giulietta Masina. The gritting, well-composed cinematography is by Vladimir Samoilovski and the haunting musical score is by Klaus Hundsbichler (with a little help from Eric Satie!). This is one of those films that is disturbing in the best sense of the word: it makes us think beyond our safe borders and contemplate the plight of the oppressed, both children and adults, in a country torn by recurring violence.

Story : In the anguished Macedonian drama The Great Water, adapted from Zhivko Chingo's novel by director Ivo Trajkov, an ailing Communist politician conjures deathbed memories of his tormented boyhood in a Stalinist orphanage for children of political offenders. No kindly teacher steps in, à la Les Choristes, offering the balm of music. But wait, it gets sadder, with imagery even more fevered: The young Lem (Saso Kekenovski) admires Isak (Maja Stankovska, a girl believably cast as a boy), a mysteriously spiritual newcomer, who in turn is attracted to a fervent party follower, who... Well, none of it is good, and all of it, Chingo and Trajkov suggest, goes into shaping a Macedonian national identity uneasily poised between religious longing and ideological resolve.

This post-apocalyptic tale conveys the hardship and misery the world endures after global destruction and turmoil has taken their toll. It's 2019, and the immortal Kuzman is desperately trying to determine his destiny, in turn, figuring out a way to die. He's remorseful of his sinful incestuous behavior. During his journey through time, the mockery of the 20th century unfolds and we discover how our world will eventually come to its catastrophic end. As it turns out, the "merry" Santa Claus 2000, goes on a frenzied rampage; his wrath leaving mercy on no one. He demolishes our world, and those who survived this tragedy were sentenced to immortal life in the post-apocalyptic ruins of the 20th century.

Aneta Leshnikovska - Dali boli aka Does it hurt (2007)

The Dogma 95 film movement appeared out of the need to make low budget films that will be concentrated on the storytelling and the acting. No long preparations, no stylish million-dollar bullshitting. Just film. For many years most of the filmmakers in the Balkan have been doing exactly the same. It is just that they haven’t made a manifesto and most of them have never even heard of Dogma 95. Does it hurt? The First Balkan Dogma is a no budget mockumentary shot on HDV according to the dogma rules.

Sinopsis:
A Macedonian filmmaker wants to make the first official Balkan Dogma film in Macedonia. She lies to her friends that she got financial support from the Zentropa producers. The film starts from the moment that she gathers her closest friends and asks them to join her in the quest for finding the right story for the film. She has decided to film the whole process from the very beginning and use it later for the making off. Following the four characters in their quest we discover Macedonia and the Balkans in 2006. The camera captures visual sequences of the absurdity, humour and survival techniques of a land and people in transition. The making of project ultimately becomes the true subject of the film.
