Max Ophüls - Le Plaisir aka House of Pleasure (1952)

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51vUswpvjgL.jpg

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0045034

Synopsis:
Three stories about the pleasure. The first one is about a man hiding his age behind a mask to keep going to balls and fancying women - pleasure and youth. Then comes the long tale of Mme Tellier taking her girls (whores) to the country for attending her niece's communion - pleasure and purity. And lastly, Jean the painter falling in love with his model - pleasure and death.

Review:
Adapted from three short stories by Guy de Maupassant, the favourite author of French language teachers, Le Plaisir (The Pleasure) sees Max Ophuls at his beguiling best. An old man poses as a youth behind a mask, a Madame and her girls take to the country to attend her niece’s first holy communion, and an artist, having abandoned his lover, agrees to marry her after a suicide attempt leaves her crippled. These are, says the narrator from the darkness of the opening frame, ‘old tales for your modern times’. This immediately distances the viewer and throughout Ophuls, reminds us of the artifice of his creation, integrating physical frames into his extraordinary baroque sets. Particular attention should be paid to how the frivolity of church’s interior is continuous with the outfits of the prostitutes. Though Ophuls never judges, this heightened theatrical reality strongly enhances the didactic element of these moral tales.

At the close of the first story, a middle-aged doctor thanks the masked man’s wife for ‘a precious lesson’. She, he sees, has dedicated her life to looking after the foolish man she loves, coming to accept his need to chase younger women as the tragic plight of the handsome man who has lost his looks and vitality to old age. In the central story, as the altar bell rings, one of the prostitutes is moved by the simplicities of country life and the innocence of the children. Her tears prove infectious and soon the whole church is quietly sobbing, moved by the mysteries of life and its losses. In the final story, as the now aging artist pushes his wife in her wheelchair, we are told that he has achieved everything he could wish for: ‘happiness is not a joyful thing’.

Watching Le Plaisir, however, is a joy. Ophuls’ shots are breath-quickeningly long. Flowing with supreme elegance, they weave through interior and exterior spaces, painting complex narratives; so subtly integrated are the words of the narrator that it is impossible to imagine these two strands in the telling of the story evolving separately.

Each tale begins with an exceptionally crafted sequence. The dazzling opening at the ball crams humour, folly, and tragedy into its dizzyingly complex movement; in a classic shot, the brothel is introduced as a haven of tranquillity and good order, the camera following Madame from the exterior as she moves through the interior closing shutters and putting out candles; and, finally, in a delightful scene of brilliant economy, the artist spots the model, follows her up stairs, and in the time it takes the camera to pan around to meet the couple coming down stairs on the opposite side, they have established their love. When next she ascends stairs, it will be to leap from the window, the camera taking her view all the way to the awning, several storeys below, which breaks her fall. In each case, the story and the architecture are harmonised in a perfect formal artistry. Consequently, Le Plaisir’s quaintness should not be mistaken for naïvety, for Ophuls gives continuous and deliberate aesthetic pleasure. It’s easy to see why the wunderkinds of the 1960s held him in such awe.

Max Ophüls - Werther (1938)

http://img58.imageshack.us/img58/3774/leromandewerther02qv0.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

This is Max Ophüls' adaptation of Goethe's tragic novel "The Sorrows of Young Werther". Pierre Richard-Willm plays the passionate young hero who falls in love with a woman (Annie Vernay) only to find she's pledged to another.

Max Ophüls - The Exile (1947)

http://img187.imageshack.us/ifs/4103/img300/1/15631947laconquistadeunjg6.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

When Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. started his career in silent screen he did not go for the swashbuckling roles that his famous father did. My guess is he wanted to be judged on his own as a player. In fact it was his mother who when Fairbanks, Sr. was slow with the child support who got him into film in the first place, hoping to capitalize on the name. Later as he got older and was established in his own right, Fairbanks made claim to the legacy of his father in such films as The Exile.

In fact Fairbanks both wrote the screenplay and produced this film and got European director Max Ophuls for the piloting. He plays a most famous exile, Charles Stuart, Charles II of Great Britain who is exiled in the Netherlands and poised to reclaim his own in 1660.

The story is based on a historical novel by British writer Cosmo Hamilton and it tells of that brief interregnum in British history between the sudden death of Oliver Cromwell and the restoration of Charles II. Charles Stuart had narrowly escaped from his country after the Puritan takeover and was living in exile in somewhat humble circumstances wherever in Europe he could find shelter. In 1660 it was the Netherlands.

Historians have debated long about the collapse of the military dictatorship of Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell. He had things pretty much his own way and when he died his son Richard wasn't up to the job he inherited. It was a close run thing that the United Kingdom did not break apart into civil war again at this time.

By 1660 just about everybody except the most committed of Puritans felt that only a Stuart Restoration would keep the country united. But some of those most committed Puritans had a big vested interest in seeing that the Restoration did not occur. Therein lies the tale of this film.

She and her sister Anna are invited to a party by Roberto, the son of a well-to-do banker. He and Gaby plan to go to Rome together, but his father's unexpected return sends him off alone. Gaby is on very good terms with Roberto's invalid mother, but his father, Leonardo, is drawn to Gaby...

IMDb user comments:

Signora di tutti is truly one of the most underrated films of movie history. When I saw it ten years ago I was marveled about its modernity although belonging to 1934. I´m sure Welles undoubtely watched it before filming Citizen Kane, because Max Ophuls´s narration and editing techniques in that picture somehow anticipated Orson´s landmark screen jewel. This movie deserves a standout place in the development of film language.

Max Ophüls - Liebelei aka Flirtation (1933)

http://i40.tinypic.com/w22kh0.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Liebelei is one of the earliest of the cinematic banquets directed by German filmmaker Max Ophuls. The film, set in imperial Vienna, concerns the romance between a young girl and a lieutenant. A powerful baron misreads the lieutenant's ardor, assuming that it is being directed towards his own wife. A duel follows which, no matter how it turns out, will spell tragedy for at least one of the characters we care about. The central character is portrayed by Magda Schneider, the mother of 1960s film star Romy Schneider. Liebelei was filmed in two different languages, German and French; the latter version was titled Une Histoire D'Amour.

Max Ophüls - The Reckless Moment (1949)

http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/2449/recklessmoment.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Dave Kehr @ Chicago Reader wrote:

This 1949 melodrama from Max Ophuls's postwar Hollywood period is usually overlooked in favor of the masterpieces he would realize upon returning to Europe (Lola Montes, The Earrings of Madame de . . . ). But it's one of the director's most perverse stories of doomed love, with Joan Bennett as a bored middle-class housewife whose daughter accidentally kills her sleazy suitor, and James Mason as an engagingly exotic Irishman who attempts to blackmail the mother. Naturally, they feel a certain attraction. Ophuls spins a network of fine irony out of the lurid material; Bennett is surprisingly effective as a typical Ophuls heroine, discovering a long-suppressed streak of masochism. 82 min.
