If you are moved by the death of a parakeet at the beginning of The Elementary Particles (Elementarteilchen), you are in for a bumpy ride, as all of humanity as we know it will be wiped out by the film’s end in a brief written epilogue. Of course, those who have read the novel (Les particules élémentaires in its original French, Atomised in its UK version) saw this coming, but for those who are unfamiliar with Michel Houellebecq’s cult hit that explosively mixes sex, death and science to annihilate mankind – and blames the flower power generation for it in the process – this might come as something of a shock.

German writer-director Oskar Roehler, who seamlessly transposed the story from its original Île-de-France setting to Berlin-Brandenburg, prefers lingering on the sex (and, implicitly, the possibility of love that might go with it), moving science and death to the background and the downright dark and pessimistic ending into a couple of phrases shown on screen as nothing more than an afterthought. The film’s semi-upbeat ending is indeed its weakest part, but until then, Roehler delivers a most elegant, provocative and strongly acted film on the subjects that have become his trademark: sex, social outsiders, the cruelty of society and the problems the post 1968-generation (to which he himself belongs) have inherited from their parents.

Oskar Roehler - Agnes und seine Brüder AKA Agnes and His Brothers (2004)

Agnes and His Brothers is the story of three siblings who couldn't be any more different from each other: Hans-Joerg (Moritz Bleibtreu) is a librarian, sexually obsessed, and a passionate voyeur. Werner (Herbert Knaup) is a successful politician with a self-confident wife and two sons. But behind the facade of their marriage, the foundation is starting to chip. And then there is Agnes (Martin Weiss), who used to be a man, but who now, as a result of unfulfilled love and with great desire, works his way through the night as a dancer.

They have little in common, except an eccentric old father, relationship problems that are totally screwing up their lives, and a distinct possibility those two things are connected. When Hans-Jörg’s sex addict meetings don't seem to be stopping his incessant masturbation and awkwardness with women, he conceals his sexual frustration behind his meek librarian appearance.

Older brother Werner is hard at work on his own mask. Much more successful at political combat than family diplomacy, he spends time bickering with bored wife Signe to fan the only heat left in his marriage. His rocky relationship is aggravated by his smartass, pot-cultivating teenage son who makes his upper-class suburban nightmare complete. And Agnes, haunted by the mother she never knew, and perhaps too nostalgic about her past as a man, can't quite fit into the mold of the little homemaker expected by her bossy boyfriend
