http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

synopsis taken from the Cannes Festival site:

«Once upon a time there was a war… In the darkness of the night, a young soldier goes AWOL.
Tonia, a veteran transsexual in Lisbon’s drag shows, watches the world around her crumble. The competition from younger artists threatens her star status.
Under pressure from her young boyfriend Rosário to assume her female identity, the sex change operation that will transform her into a woman, Tonia struggles against her deeply-held religious convictions. If, on the one hand, she wants to be the woman that Rosário so desires, on the other, she knows that before God she can never be that woman. And her son, whom she abandoned when he was a child, now a deserter, comes looking for her.
Tonia discovers that she’s ill. To get away from all her troubles she travels to the countryside with Rosário, on the excuse of visiting his brother. Rosário takes the road of his childhood but will never find the right way. Lost, they find themselves in an enchanted forest, a magical world where they come across the enigmatic Maria Bakker and her friend Paula.
And that meeting will turn their whole world on its head…»

João César Monteiro - Le Bassin de J.W. AKA The Hips of John Wayne (1997)

Quote:

The Portuguese auteur João César Monteiro can be his own worst enemy. Leaden, talky stretches wear out even that rare moviegoer who'll warm to the idea of a two-and-a-half-hour philosophical comedy about God and Lucifer, theater and cinema, dirty old men and fetching young women....more

Manoel de Oliveira - Aniki Bóbó [+Extras] (1942)

"Film4" wrote:
One of the earliest features by Portugal's most renowned director, it was also one of De Oliveira's best-known works for many years. Using the actual children of the area, the film follows the adventures of street urchins growing up in the slums of Oporto and on the banks of the river. Much simpler in style and more approachable than many of De Oliveira's later films, it has excellent location photography and natural performances from the kids. Coincidentally it was made in the same year as Vittorio de Sica made his first Italian neo-realist film, The Children Are Watching Us.

Solveig Nordlund - Aparelho Voador a Baixa Altitude AKA Low-Flying Aircraft (2002)

Synopsis

Based on a the short story "Low Flying Aircraft" by J.G. Ballard and set in a near future where humans are dying breed. Judite and André flee to a semi-abandoned apartment complex to protect their mutant child from certain death

BBC4 review

"Something is terribly wrong," mutters the beautiful Laura Foster part way through Low-Flying Aircraft, ominously delivering the understatement of the film. Laura and her husband André live in a world governed by an Orwellian dictatorship known as the Confederation. Births require a 'Fit for Life' license and 'illegally' pregnant women are arrested by gangs of armed guards.

Low-Flying Aircraft is based on the JG Ballard story of the same name. Director Solveig Nordlung ensures the setting is more naturalistic and recognisable than the steel world where the original tale is set, and this blending of familiar sights - decrepit hotels, clear blue swimming pools and polluted beaches - heightens the horror of the differences which define this nightmarish vision of the future.

The film, which received its UK premier in December 2002, is shot with flair and imagination by Nordlung, who confidently blends elements of science fiction, horror and a love story to fashion a powerful but surprisingly warm parable. He's ably assisted by Margarida Marinho as Laura, who delivers an entrancing and credible performance.

Ballard once commented that "...low-flying aircraft are always flying over Shepperton, [his home since 1960] and still are", which may explain their habitual presence in his works, notably Empire of the Sun and The Kindness of Women. But here, they ultimately represent a chance for a better future and enlightenment. This element typifies the sense that Low-Flying Aircraft is not simply another totally bleak and apocalyptic movie. Beauty, kindness and the resolve to rebel still persist in this frightening world. In other words, hope remains.

João César Monteiro - As Bodas de Deus aka The Spousals of God [+Extras] (1999)

User Comments :

This is one of the most extraordinary films I've seen in a couple of years. It's easy to dismiss as a Dirty Old Man's fantasy, but it's D.O.M. fantasy as an art form. Monteiro has invented a screen persona for himself that looks like Jacques Tati had designed a decent late-in-life role for Woody Allen, less neurotic and more rustic. Deus is a wacky old bum who permanently oscillates between poetic wisdom and foolishness.

The sets sometimes have the poetic quality of a Tarkovski film, but often enough, glimpses of Gilliamish madness creep in. Shots are static and beautifully composed, a typical feat of art movies which ironically highlights the comical aspects of this film. The story is simple: Deus receives a suitcase full of money from a Heavenly Messenger, spends it on girls and the good life, only to find real love when he's broke. The cultural background of this is clearly Catholic, but nothing should be taken too serious about this film. In its visual inventiveness and its strange take on art and comedy, it seems to me absolutely unique.

Joao Cesar Monteiro is no more with us. But for me he is the greatest filmmaker of all times. This film proves his talent in making absolutist comical dramas of hidden motives. He is a great actor too and has appeared in his own films on various occasions. It appears that the basic issue of this film is to ascertain whether a human being can be god or not. Everybody knows that it is difficult to be a god.

Since this narrative idea is laden with umpteen elements of zany absurdity, a lot of patience is required to watch carefully the events unfold. Joao Cesar Monteiro has tackled Christian religion too in this film. The result of this conflict is delightful. There is a good cinematographic representation of old versus new too. This makes us aware of the fact that old people are full of wisdom unlike their young counterparts. This film like its filmmaker has kept a very low profile. This is the reason why it is not for people asking more and more action, happening and events.
