Robert Z. Leonard - Let Us Be Gay (1930)

Norma Shearer, "Queen of the Lot" at MGM in the 1930s, took full advantage of the liberated period before the film industry fell under the restrictions of the Production Code. Shearer began the decade with a bang, creating a sexy new image for her Oscar-winning role in The Divorcee that startled even her husband, MGM production head Irving Thalberg. Let Us Be Gay is the story of another divorcee who finds romantic adventure, this time in Paris, while barely enveloped by gauzy gowns knowingly designed by Adrian, Shearer's favored costumer. Shearer's characters of this period were remarkably forthright in their erotic impulses, although in Let Us Be Gay the accent is on comedy as she wins back her husband by merely pretending to have been "wicked." Biographer Gavin Lambert wrote that the Shearer of this period had "a silky alienation that Scott Fitzgerald admired, kindred to Daisy's in The Great Gatsby, her face 'sad and lovely with bright things in it.'"

Let Us Be Gay had a shooting schedule of a mere 26 days, hurried along because Shearer was pregnant. Because her condition had become apparent during the last week of filming, Adrian draped his star with even more care than usual and Shearer was photographed behind foreground objects such as furniture and potted plants that obscured her figure. Irving Grant Thalberg, Jr. was born two weeks before the well-received New York opening of Let Us Be Gay, with Shearer fans celebrating her "double triumph."

Robert Z. Leonard - The Great Ziegfeld (1936)

http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/8607/thegreatziegfeld.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

This is one of many biographical movies that Hollywood loved to produce in the 30’s, those famous personalities involved in Show business especially. and probably the most lavish of them all, as well as the longest – three hours. These musical extravaganzas don’t seem to be popular these days, however it's an opportunity to peep at the world of the Hollywood musical of 70 years ago.

This is the (rather whitewashed) biography of Florenz Ziegfeld (William Powell) who started in show business as a sideshow barker and later to rise to legendary Broadway impressario.

Got Best Picture Oscar in 1936, as did actress Luise Rainer (as Anna Held, Ziegfeld’s first wife) with Oscar Nominations for Director Robert Z.Leonard, Best Screenplay for William McGuire, also nominations for Best Editing, Dance Direction, and Best Art Director.

Robert Z. Leonard - Pride and Prejudice (1940)

http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/2049/pridenpred1940en1eu5.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Summary written by Snow Leopard
Mr. and Mrs. Bennet have five unmarried daughters, and Mrs. Bennet is especially eager to find suitable husbands for them. When the rich single gentlemen Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy come to live nearby, the Bennets have high hopes. But pride, prejudice, and misunderstandings all combine to complicate their relationships and to make happiness
difficult.

Long before 19th-century novelist Jane Austen became a hot property in Hollywood, MGM produced this opulent and entertaining adaptation of one of Austen's best-known novels. The elegant and slyly satirical comedy of manners gets under way when socially conscious Mrs. Bennet (Mary Boland), with the begrudging assistance of her husband (Edmund Gwenn), begins seeking out suitable (and suitably wealthy) husbands for her five daughters: Elizabeth (Greer Garson), Jane (Maureen O'Sullivan), Lydia (Ann Rutherford), Kitty (Heather Angel), and Mary (Marsha Hunt). One of the least likely matrimonial prospects is Mr. Darcy (Laurence Olivier), a rich, handsome, but cynical and boorish young man. Naturally, Elizabeth Bennet, the strongest-willed of the Bennet girls, is immediately fascinated by him, and she sets out to land him — but only on her own terms, and only after she has exacted a bit of genteel revenge for his calculated indifference to her.

Robert Z. Leonard - The Divorcee (1930)

http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/5402/1fx369cja9h22y933z1yhq1oc7.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

From "moviediva":
Norma Shearer finds the freedom of the New Woman illusory in this steamy Pre-Code melodrama, the first film to challenge the newly minted Production Code. Based on a notorious best seller, Ex-Wife, Shearer is horrified to discover that its okey-dokey if husband Chester Morris sleeps around, but not her.

Ex-Wife was so shocking in 1929 that it was published anonymously. Later printings revealed it was the debut novel of Ursula Parrott. She was an ex-wife herself, in between her first and second husbands (she'd have four). The novel is a Jazz Age fugue, set in an
hedonistic, edgy New York where everyone drinks, goes to first nights, drinks, goes to parties and drinks some more. Three Scotches before going out... how did they ever stay on their feet? They drink Manhattans, Martinis and Clover Clubs, a Martini with grenadine, lime juice and egg white added; sort of a salmonella cocktail.

Patricia (renamed the androgynous Jerry for the film) has married Peter; she thinks he's her true love. He's handsome, but shallow and mean. After he cheats on her, she does the same, and discovers there is, after all, no Single Standard. He hits her once in a while and shoves her through a glass French door. "Brought up under the tattered banners of 'Love Everlasting' and 'All for Purity' we have to adapt ourselves to life in the era of the one night stand." Patricia uses "sex as an anaesthetic." The men she likes she doesn't sleep with (one of them is dying of syphilis). She runs around the track at the gymnasium after work and says she's "Running through days of posing as an efficient young business woman, through nights of posing as a sophisticated young woman about town. Running from the memory of Peter, towards something or nothing, it didn't matter which." Her ex-husband is never a serious reunion candidate (although she does see him and sleep with him on occasion). And when she finally gets her divorce, "It is so silly to mind. Just an incident in the career of a Modern Woman. What the hell!" She eventually marries a pal and sets off on an around the world cruise, hoping to run into her new true love unfortunately married, and now stationed in Japan).

"I had to marry a man bigger and more important in every way than myself. Only in such a marriage could I live without a sense of being cramped and confined."
