Goran Markovic - Sabirni Centar AKA The Meeting Point (1989)

From the Screenwriter of "Who's Singin' Over There","The Marathon Family","Balkanski Spijun" (flicks that are Serbian Cinematography at its best) comes (Writing Credits) this brilliant movie set in the surreal atmosphere of an archaeological site in northern Serbia in the second half of the 20th century. During the excavations of ancient Roman ruins, an old archeology professor discovers a Roman tombstone for which he has been searching all of his life. The tomb actually covers the passage from this world to the “other” one. In an attempt to move it from its place, the professor suffers a heart attack and soon dies. However, he only appears to be dead; in fact he is in a state “between life and death.” Being half-dead, half-alive, he can now establish a connection between the living and the dead. Speaking with his loved ones who passed away he can suddenly see his life in a different perspective. With the help of the professor, even the dead, led by the desire to see their relatives and loved ones, pass through the same corridor only to find out that the world of the living is not quite as they remembered or imagined it.

Sveti Georgije ubiva azdahu (St. George Shoots the Dragon)

In what has become an insurmountable quest to watch all the movies I couldn’t watch during the last year I took a tiny step and watched the Serbian submission to 2010 Oscars. It’s an epic film and tale based on a successful stage play and tells in the central story about a love triangle between two soldiers and the woman they love. But the love story is the excuse to tell what some says is a true story and others that’s not, about sending crippled troops to the front.

Set between two wars, the end of the First Balkan War and the beginning of WWI, tells the story of how Dorde saved Gavrilo life in the first war when he tried to kill himself after losing his arm plus all that evolves when they return to their village to the woman they both love and one is married to. But easily you will notice that the village is divided between those inhabitants that are healthy and the segregated crippled soldiers from the war and that’s basically the dynamic of the story that also is transferred to the love triangle.

Maybe is an interesting story told in a epic way but I couldn’t find much more than that in this film that in my opinion does not well represent East European cinema as seems like is trying too hard to –unsuccessfully- resemble Hollywood movies which is really a shame as I have seen many excellent East European films and unfortunately this one is less than average. Still I watched the entire movie trying to understand why this film was submitted to the Oscars and  to end, my conclusion is that I have no idea.

Sigh.

Stefan Arsenijevic - Ljubav i drugi zlocini AKA Love and Other Crimes (2008)

Anica lives in New Belgrade, a miserable district of tower blocks and concrete. She is mistress to Milutin, a wealthly local criminal who owns a solarium and runs a protection racket. Anica is determined not to grow old in this dump where neither love nor life seems to offer her a decent future. One grey winter’s day Anica has an idea to steal money from Milutin’s safe, get on a plane and leave the country forever.
*
Scooping a 'Best Director' award for Stefan Arsenijevic at the Sofia International Film Festival, 'Love And Other Crimes' has drawn praise for its unusual premise and original storyline. Anica is bored, amidst the post-Communist greyness of downtown Belgrade, and her feckless lover, aging petty gangster Milutin. Anica decides to steal Milutin's ill-gotten gains from his safe and flee. But when the appointed day arrives, fate has a few shocks in store. While Anica makes her farewells, she is oblivious to the fact that for those around her, it's also a day of revelations, shocks, surprises and even unexpected declarations of love… Lauded for its inspired cinematography and inventive story, 'Love And Other Crimes' is richly populated by a superb cast of disaffected losers and star-crossed dreamers, Arsenijevic carefully balances his protagonists' dreaming and scheming with gentle commentary on life in the post-Communist era.

Srdjan Spasojevic - Srpski film aka A Serbian Film (2010)

Review:
Really, really shocking movie. This is probably the only edition that we will be able to find because already they banned it from movie theaters and releasing a dvd will probably never be done. Movie is quite graphic, done professionally and you will enjoy it if you like sick stuff.

Milos, a retired ex-porn star, now leads a normal family life with his beautiful wife, Maria and five year old son Stefan in tumultuous Serbia inn a modern era of transition, trying to make ends meet. A sudden call from his former colleague, still hot porn actress Layla, will change everything. Aware of his financial problems, Layla introduces Milos to Vukmir - a shady, mysterious, menacing and politically powerful figure in the porn business who makes Milos an offer he can't refuse. A leading role in Vukmir's new production will provide financial support to Milos and his family for the rest of their lives. Milos is hesitant at first, because a contract insists on his absolute unawareness of the script they will shoot or the dramatic situations that Vukmir is going to put him through during filming. Finally, he agrees, driven by the urge of security for his family, protecting it from the impending poverty so dominant in Serbia today. From then on, Milos is drawn into a maelstrom of unbelievable cruelty an mayhem devised by his employer, "The Director", of his Destiny, Vukmir. Relentless in his attempt to make an ultimate artistic "snuff-porn", the one that has never been seen, using poor people as his acting cannon fodder, and unleash it upon the hungry eyes of the world. Vukmir and his cohorts will stop at nothing to complete his "vision", and will go to unspeakable lengths to achieve it, using even innocent children as props. In order to escape the living cinematic hell he's put into and save his family's life. Milos will have to sacrifice everything: his pride, his morality, his sanity, and maybe even his own life. In a Serbian "Heart of Darkness" where life is cheaper then a candy bar, in a struggle with enemies powerful beyond belief and just as violent and pathologically evil, the chances of surviving are abnormally thin.

Darko Lungulov - Tamo i ovde AKA Here and There (2009)

AMG: Robert (character actor David Thornton) is a grumpy burned-out musician, trying to survive in Manhattan. When his fed-up friend Rose (Thornton's real-life wife Cyndi Lauper in a small role) throws him out of her apartment, the destitute Robert reluctantly makes a deal with the young Serbian, Branko (Branislav Trifunovic), who's moving his stuff out. For a hefty fee, Robert agrees to fly to Belgrade and marry Branko's girlfriend, Ivana (Jelena Mrdja), so that she can move to New York. Branko gives him a down payment, and Robert goes to Belgrade and moves in with Branko's mother, Olga (Mirjana Karanovic of Emir Kusturica's When Father was Away on Business and Underground). Robert is predictably miserable there, unimpressed with the city's culture and unresponsive to Olga's kindness. Back in New York, Branko faces his own struggles. While he's desperately trying to raise the money to pay Robert, his van is stolen. He begs Robert to stay in Belgrade for another week until he can send the money. Devoid of options, Robert agrees, and, despite himself, slowly begins to enjoy his stay. Here and There marks the narrative feature debut of writer-director Darko Lungulov. The film had its International Premiere at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival, where it won the award for Best New York Narrative.

Vladimir Perisic - Ordinary People (2009)

Description: On a seemingly average day, a busload of young soldiers is sent to a remote location in the countryside and given a macabre task: the execution of a number of civilians. Dzoni, a green recruit, initially objects, but as he moves from one killing to the next, he is swept up by the spectre of military authority, and quickly becomes desensitized by the apparently routine nature of his task. As he nears the end of his assignment, the quiet horror of the day slowly begins to affect him, forcing a painful reconciliation with his actions. Set in an unspecified time of conflict in the Balkans, director Vladimir Perisic’s highly attuned and unsentimental lens captures the psychological toll of war on its participants, and the universal struggle of all soldiers to reconcile morality with action.
