Sergiu Nicolaescu - Atunci i-am condamnat pe toti la moarte aka Then I Sentenced Them All to Death (1971)

Plot summary: Ipu, the village idiot, lives the last days of the German occupation with a disarming candor and simplicity. After a German is killed, the inhabitants of this Transylvanian hamlet are faced with total destruction unless they hand in the person responsible for soldier's death. Ipu agrees to take the "blame" in exchange for land for his family and a "luxurious" funeral - for which a rehearsal has to be organized so that he can give his feedback. Excellent analysis of the psychological universe of a small community found at the intersection of time and history - due in part to the wonderful novel "Ipu's death" by Titus Popovici. An excellent soundtrack by A. Salamanian.

Sergiu Nicolaescu - Osânda AKA The Punishment (1976)

Opening with an arresting WWI trench battle, this details the return of soldier Manlache Preda to his village in Romania, where he finds his land had been possessed and his wife hasn't waited for him. It follows his subsequent relationship with the local squire - for the murder of whose uncle, in the 1907 peasant uprising, Preda had received a 10-year prison sentence - and his romantic attachment to the attractive, independent daughter of a fellow prisoner. It's competently directed and well shot, and many of its sequences, especially those involving the varied rural landscape, have an epic proportion. The melodramatic and eventually tragic adventures of the honourable peasant take on greater and greater symbolic significance.

Sergiu Nicolaescu - Nea Marin miliardar aka Uncle Marin, the Billionaire (1979)

When I saw this movie the very 1st time, I was 15 or 16 years old. I absolutely loved it. A lots of very good romanian actors, for that time, were playing in this movie which by the way was directed by one of the best at the time: Sergiu Nicolaescu.

The story line it is very easy to follow: Bad guys kidnap the daughter of Mr. Juvett in Romania, and they are asking for a briefacse full of US Dollars, in exchange. Everything goes as planned until Uncle Marin shows up at the same hotel where Mr. Juvett is. To complicate matter, he has a similar briefcase except his is filled with bread, beacon and green onions. It doesn't take you long to realize what follows: the two identical looking briefcases are switching owners at a very fast rate and at one point even you will loose track whom has the money or whom has the bacon. The same can be said about the carachters since the Mr. Juvett and Uncle Marin are played by the same actor - Amza Pellea.

I've seen the unique series of romanian action movies, directed in a great manner by expert romanian director Sergiu Nicolaescu many times. The story of this movie is about the investigation run by police inspector Tudor Moldovan (played by Sergiu Nicolaescu), in the case of the murders committed at a prison in Bucharest by the fascist movement in Romania , during the 1940's.
The story was somewhat discussed by the communist regime that ruled Romania, when the movie was made, who imposed Nicolaescu to show the communist movement that appears in the movie in a good light, giving it an overated role during the events that took place during the 1940's. However, the main character, Tudor Moldovan, keeps a neutral political line, which is a strong point of the movie. Built up using the Hollywood hero type, Tudor Moldovan is intelligent, brave, intuitive and ofcourse, a heart-breaker. However, Nicolaescu , being the man of action, hasn't insisted too much on the sentimental part so we won't see women almost at all in the entire movie.
Moldovan has to put up with his rival: the professional assasin, "Paraipan", excellent played by Gheorghe Dinica. Also, other characters like Limba, played by Jean Constantin, the small time punk that helps Moldovan in his investigation, gives the movie a wonderful comedy taste. Nicolaescu is a master in the work of a camera. This can be seen in all of his movies, here as well. Overall, young Nicolaescu looks good, as a director as well as the main character in the movie. So: good acting, performed by many great romanian actors, good directing, Nicolaescu style, nice story. A great movie that you should see.
