"Two couples find their lives turned upside down by their unfulfilled longings in this ensemble comedy from director Woody Allen. Alfie (Anthony Hopkins) and Helena (Gemma Jones) have been married for years. They have a grown-up daughter named Sally (Naomi Watts), who is married to a successful novelist named Roy (Josh Brolin), but finds the future of her marriage in jeopardy after falling for Greg (Antonio Banderas), the dapper owner of a prominent art gallery. Meanwhile, as Roy develops a fixation on Dia (Freida Pinto), an exotic beauty he encounters on the street, Alfie ditches Helena for Charmaine (Lucy Punch), an impressionable young call girl. Now it seems that the harder everyone tries runs away from their problems, the faster their lives seem to fall apart. "

Woody Allen - Another Woman (1988)

http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll223/zahariy/2104351020A.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Quote:

It's worth noting that in 1978, ten years before he made "Another Woman," Woody Allen created another quiet film, a drama with prominent Bergmanesque influences. The film was called "Interiors," and it was a tribute, or an American take on Bergman's "Cries and Whispers." "Interiors" examined the relationships of three sisters and their husbands in the face of the divorce of their dominant mother and detached father. The film essentially detailed the fall of "interiors," or illusory worlds created by the dominant mother in the face of tragedy and loneliness.

"Another Woman," made ten years later, shares similar themes with "Interiors," but it is more akin to Bergman's "Wild Strawberries" than to "Cries and Whispers." It is a story of a university professor, played spectacularly by Gena Rowlands, in whom something stirs when she overhears a therapy session with a young 30-something woman who is discontent with her life. The professor, Marion, feels an emptiness rise inside her - an emptiness that had settled there years before, that she can consciously feel now. Little by little, like in "Interiors," the world she has constructed for herself, a cold, cerebral world, deconstructs.

Marion despairs, enters into conflicts with herself, and questions endlessly trying to reason her way out of her malaise. But the cure for her malaise is not rational resolution and she, realizing that her strongest characteristic (namely her rational intelligence) is not enough to untangle what worries her, finds herself entirely helpless in the face of an unraveling existence.

Her drama is very much like the drama of Professor Isak Borg from Bergman's film, a man on his way to receive a medal for his lifetime achievements. And, on the road, he also succumbs to the same malaise as Marion, the same questioning and the same painful re-evaluation. The horror shared by both Marion and Professor Borg, of course, is that despite their highly lauded accomplishments and their intellectual self-satisfaction, they feel void. There must, in other words, be something else to life than strictly intellectual work, however satisfying it may be.

In Bergman (both "Cries and Whispers" and "Wild Strawberries") and in Allen (both "Interiors" and "Another Woman") life falls under question. The entire existence is evaluated, its worth and meaning doubted. In "Interiors" and "Cries and Whispers," however, the meaninglessness pervades everything in the films - the dialogues, behaviors and even visuals. The sisters in "Interiors" shatter the mother's reality and find nothingness - they continue as they were, much like the two sisters in "Cries and Whispers" for whom the death of their young sister changed absolutely nothing, and only confirmed their beliefs about the world.

However, "Another Woman" is not as stark (though it is stark indeed at times). Marion grabs at the chance to re-evaluate the life she feels she painfully wasted and tries to start again. It's not a false choice, or a gimmick on Allen's part, but it's a true depiction of Marion's sincere desire to continue to struggle because her life does have value for her. She rediscovers a passion for the struggle and her motivation is the same curiosity that made her go through the questioning process in the first place.

"Another Woman" is a testament to the fact that Woody Allen was still at the top of his game in the late 1980s. It is a brilliant, honest and (surprisingly) warm film. It is not a remake or rip-off of Bergman's work, though it is highly influenced by him (which shouldn't seem so surprising to anyone, because Bergman himself was influenced by the most basic questions of existence). "Another Woman" is an existential film that is both uncompromising and not hopeless. It's one of my favorite Woody Allen films and it reveals to us not only a great American director, but one whose films are of worldly greatness.

Woody Allen - Melinda and Melinda (2004)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v712/buttzilla/folder2/posters/poster_melindaandmelinda2.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Description: Over a meal in a French restaurant, Sy poses a conundrum to his fellow diners: Is the essence of life comic or tragic? For the sake of argument, he tells a story, which the others then embellish to illustrate their takes on life. The story starts as follows: A young Manhattan couple, Park Avenue princess Laurel and tippling actor Lee, throw a dinner party to impress Lee's would-be producer when their long-lost friend Melinda appears at their front door, bedraggled and woebegone. In the tragic version of what happens next, the beautiful intruder is a disturbed woman who got bored with her Midwestern doctor-husband and dumped him for a photographer. Her husband took the children away and she spiraled into a suicidal depression that landed her straight-jacketed in a mental ward. In the comic version, Melinda is childless and a downstairs neighbor to the dinner hosts, who are ambitious Indy filmmaker Susan and under-employed actor Hobie. Back and forth the stories go, contrasting the destinies of the two Melindas.

Woody Allen - Anything Else (2003)

http://img234.imageshack.us/img234/945/gr200422d1dn5.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

A young artist struggling with his career and his muse is getting more than a little aggravation from Cupid in this romantic comedy written and directed by Woody Allen. Jerry Falk (Jason Biggs) is a promising 21-year-old comedy writer living in New York City. While Jerry has talent, he's having a hard time getting his career off the ground, which might have something to do with the fact his agent Harvey (Danny DeVito) is a well-meaning, but ineffectual, blowhard, and his mentor David Dobel (Allen) is an increasingly paranoid eccentric whose twin careers as a teacher and standup comic are both floundering. Poised at the top of Jerry's mountain of anxieties is his relationship with his girlfriend Amanda (Christina Ricci); from the first moment he saw her, Jerry has been in love with her, but Amanda's multiple neuroses, fear of commitment, and frustrating intimacy issues make her all but impossible to be around. Jerry is approaching his breaking point when the small flat he shares with Amanda becomes home to a third roommate -- Amanda's mother Paula (Stockard Channing), who has decided to come to New York to chase her dream of becoming a cabaret singer. Anything Else also features supporting performances from Jimmy Fallon, William Hill, and jazz vocalist Diana Krall. -- Mark Deming @ allmovie.com

Richard Schickel - Woody Allen: A life In Film (2002)

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

A series of interviews with Woody Allen interlaced with clips from his films.

IMDB review by Alex V.:

This feature-length Woody Allen interview sees him plough through his films at almost breakneck speed, giving little primers and insights into his intentions with each one. If you've seen the films it'll interest you, if you haven't I wonder whether these soundbites will entice you to check them out...

The problem is lack of time - you get a couple of minutes on each movie when perhaps you'd like a lot longer on perhaps a lot fewer of his films. On Interiors his fascinating explanation of the film really made me want to seek it out again, whereas feeble and rather pointless references to other films just to 'get them in somewhere' (Broadway Danny Rose, Zelig, Radio Days, Mighty Aphrodite) just frustrated me.

But the sense I got from the interview above all is how much films and art in general belong to the audience and not their creators - he seems almost dismissive at times of works regarded as among his best. And Allen will not watch his old material, as most directors don't, yet we as the audience are supposed to be endlessly fascinated by it - I got the sense that we could probably tell him a few things about his own films that he hadn't considered, but I also sense that he wouldn't be particularly interested to hear them. It leaves me wondering what the director's viewpoint matters at all to all but the film buff, surely we would all agree that his films speak more to more people than this talking head.

Woody Allen - Hollywood Ending (2002)

http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/9726/hollywoodendingpd4.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Description: A down-on-his luck auteur gets one more chance at the big time -- provided his neuroses don't swallow him whole -- in Woody Allen's 33rd feature release, Hollywood Ending. Allen plays Val Waxman, a one-time cinematic genius who's resorted to taking advertisement work to pay the bills for himself and his airhead live-in girlfriend, Lori (Debra Messing). Val finds his luck is about to change, however, when he receives the script for The City Never Sleeps, a period noir set against the backdrop of 1940s New York City. It seems his ex-wife, Ellie (Tea Leoni), now an executive at Galaxy Pictures, has been pulling for him to direct the picture, claiming he's the only man who can do justice to the script. She even manages to convince her boyfriend, Hal (Treat Williams), Galaxy's high-powered studio head, to take a chance on Val's "unique vision." Just when the cameras are ready to roll, however, Val finds that unique vision in jeopardy -- literally -- as he's struck with a psychosomatic case of blindness. When physicians and psychiatrists fail to cure him, Val contrives a scheme to forge ahead with the picture, for fear of blowing his one last chance at greatness. Hollywood Ending co-stars George Hamilton and Mark Rydell.

A funny, promising setup gives way to endless schtick in Woody Allen's well-cast but slack farce. Despite its loaded subject matter -- namely, big-budget filmmaking -- this is no Player: Save for a few throwaway industry jokes, Hollywood Ending is mostly pratfalls and slapstick, centered around a neurotic conceit that even Allen, cinema's neurotic laureate, can't pull off. Once afflicted with hysterical blindness, his Val Waxman spends much of the movie fumbling and stumbling around a movie set, to rapidly diminishing comedic results. Allen has made entire films on such slight premises before -- Zelig and his chapter of New York Stories, Oedipus Wrecks, come to mind -- but those films were at once richer with subtext and more economical. Ending's climax, on the other hand, comes after at least 20 minutes of painfully broad, extraneous comedy, and hinges on a character who's barely been mentioned, let alone seen. All this notwithstanding, Allen evinces spry, witty turns from his supporting cast, including the ever-sharp Tea Leoni, a pleasantly ditzy Debra Messing, and, of all people, the ageless, orange-hued lothario George Hamilton.

Woody Allen - The Curse of the Jade Scorpion (2001)

http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/3525/jadescorpionxy6.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Writer and director Woody Allen returns to the Manhattan of the past with this romantic comedy set in 1940, the era of fedora hats and gumshoe detectives. Allen stars as C.W. Briggs, an insurance investigator whose razor-sharp instincts have just led to the successful conclusion of another case, the recovery of a stolen Picasso. While he's a valued employee, Briggs is under fire from efficiency expert Betty Ann Fitzgerald (Helen Hunt) for his antiquated attitudes and refusal to accept modern crime-solving techniques such as fingerprinting. C.W. claims he puts himself directly into the criminal mind, a skill that will do him no good when he and Betty Ann are hypnotized at a Rainbow Room gathering one night by the magician Volton (David Ogden Stiers). As a parlor trick to entertain their co-workers, Volton makes C.W. and Betty Ann believe they're a couple that's deeply in love. But the performer secretly keeps up the ruse after the party's over, calling C.W. to whisper a magic code word and ordering the detective to rob wealthy homes with security systems that C.W. himself has designed. With no memory of his thieving activities, a frustrated C.W. can't solve the high-profile jewel burglaries, while he and Betty Ann struggle with their odd new attraction for each other, made more complicated by the fact that Betty Ann is romantically involved with their boss (Dan Aykroyd).

Woody Allen - Small Time Crooks (2000)

http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/7819/smalltimecrooksfrontcq6.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

plot>
Ray Winkler is a "small time crook" with big dreams. Recruiting his wife and some fellow bumblers, he leaves his job as a dishwasher to open a cookie store next to a bank. And while his wife operates the cookie store, he and his cohorts work in the basement on breaking into the bank. Wealth comes from an unexpected direction, helping fulfill his dreams. But there is an ancient curse about getting everything you wish for.

Review by Cinephiles>
Small Time Crooks, written and directed by Woody Allen, offers a comedic view on the effects that excessive wealth has on love, trust and self-identity. Although Small Time Crooks exposes the themes of poverty and of the popular desire to become rich and famous, the film does not intend to offer a serious commentary on such issues. Instead, Small Time Crooks focuses on its protagonistic couple's cat-and-dog relationship, its naiveté, bad taste and overall clumsiness.

Small Time Crooks tells the funny tale of the impoverished Ray Winkler (Woody Allen), a dishwasher, and his wife Frenchy (Tracy Ullman), a manicurist. The film visits the couple after 25 years of an imperfect marriage, when their situation forces them to question their self-worth and to hope to rekindle long-forgotten dreams of success. Driven by an unfounded self-confidence, Ray decides to rob a bank with his equally eager and ignorant buddies (Jon Lovitz, Michael Rapaport and Tony Darrow), and manages to set up a cookie shop near the bank, from where to dig a tunnel. Unexpectedly, Frenchy succeeds in "making good dough", and their cookie shop cover-up promises to become a moneymaking emporium.

Although the plot of Small Time Crooks offers the viewer a series of humorous surprises, character development is also unexpected and inconsistent. Initially, Small Time Crooks establishes Frenchy as patient, strong and somewhat sensible, while Ray is portrayed as childish, overly anxious and prone to failure. Surprisingly, these characterizations are switched without sufficient evidence of the characters' transformations. Frenchy's lifelong personal qualities, including her unconditional loyalty to Ray, are instantly replaced by the accessories of financial success, making her weak and vulnerable in her obviously risky dealings with the attractive David (Hugh Grant: Mickey Blue Eyes). On the other hand, the once childish Ray is suddenly defined by a mature sense of self and of his love for his wife, rendering him suddenly immune to his familiar desire for money. Nevertheless, Small Time Crooks is a film guided by the spontaneity of its resolutions, and is successful as it creates uncomplicated comedy by placing its laughable characters in amusing situations.
