Miklós Jancsó - Csillagosok, katonák AKA The Red and the White (1967)

http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV5BMTkzMzUyNDMwOV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwMzYyMDI5._V1._SX333_SY475_.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Description: Banned for many years in the U.S.S.R., Hungarian director Miklos Jansco's masterful The Red And The White is a haunting, powerful film about the absurdity and evil of war.

Set in Central Russia during the Civil War of 1918, the story details the murderous entanglements between Russia's Red soldiers and the counter-revolutionary Whites in the hills along the Volga. The epic conflict moves with skillful speed from a deserted monastery to a riverbank hospital to a final, unforgettable hillside massacre.

The director of such Hungarian cinema classics as Silence And Cry (1968), My Way Home (1964) and The Roundup (1967), Jancso here creates what many believe to be his finest work. The Red And The White is a moving visual feast where every inch of the Cinemascope frame is used to magnificent effect. With his brilliant use of exceptionally long takes, vast and unchanging landscapes and Tamas Somlo's hypnotic black and white photography, Jancso gives the film the quality of a surreal nightmare. In the director's uncompromising world, people lose all sense of identity and become hopeless pawns in the ultimate game of chance. -- Kino.com

Miklós Jancsó - Jesus Christ's Horoscope AKA Jézus Krisztus horoszkópja (1989)

http://i41.tinypic.com/mukh06.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

From allmovie.com:
The work of renowned Hungarian screenwriter and director Miklos Jancso has grown increasingly enigmatic since his first film in 1958. Jézus Krisztus horoszkópja is no exception to this rule. Jancso emphasizes highly evocative and ambiguous imagery over dialog or exposition. Here he seems primarily interested in showing the painful, stunted lives of Hungary's intellectuals, who are shown as remaining silent and ineffectual during various political crises. There are several action sequences involving chases and shootouts, but since there's no clear narrative we're not sure how they relate to each other or to anything else. The film is, however, visually fascinating, with shots of police cars, horses, and naked bodies juxtaposed and extensive use of multiple video imagery. The camera work is dazzling. This kind of film is obviously not aimed at general audiences. Fans of Jancso and those interested in experimental filmmaking will find it a difficult but rewarding experience.

Miklós Jancsó - A kövek üzenete Hegyalja AKA Message of Stone - Budapest (1993)

"Jewish themes" in the films of Miklós Jancsó:

Jancsó's recurring interest in Jewish culture is one aspect of his work that has consistently been overlooked by most critics—including Hungarian ones. György Báron reflects on the director's hitherto unrecognised obsession.

"Jewish themes"? Let's put the term in quotes, because what would count as a "theme"? The Hungarian-themed Szegénylegények (The Round Up, 1965)? The Russian (Soviet) Csillagosok katonák (Red and the White, 1967)? The Italian La Pacifista (1970)? If we discuss detention camps, is that a "Jewish theme"? Or what about the love of two Israeli citizens? And are these films actually about what—per se—their theme is?

In the oeuvre of Miklós Jancsó, films with a so-called "Jewish theme" (regardless of what we mean by this) play a major role, from the three-part Jelenlét ( Presence) that he began in 1965 and finished in 1985, through to the half dozen pieces of the Kövek üzenete (Message of Stones) series that he made at the beginning of the 1990s, L'Aube (The Dawn, 1985) taking place in Palestine, and two new documentaries with the titles Elmondták-e? (Have You Been Told?, 1995) and Zsoltár (Psalm, 1996). Throughout a hundred-odd years of film history, no other significant film director has made so many documentaries with an almost monomaniacal attachment to the same theme.

Why is it, then, that this conspicuous body of work in the Jancsó oeuvre is surrounded by a wall of cautious silence? Is it because of the "theme"? Is it about the usual restraint, confused looking aside? Or do we feel that Jancsó is being an unauthorised tourist in the area? Is the undeniable inconsistency in the quality of these works the reason for the bashful silence? Would it be embarrassing to applaud the "good intentions" of this great director?

The first part of the Jelenlét series, to my mind, is immeasurably heavier and deeper than the second and third one. From the Kövek üzenete series, the Máramaros or the Moldavia travelogue is probably weaker and more superficial than the one about Budapest. The structural form of Zsoltár is more delicate and fragile than Elmondták-e?, another Holocaust story and one shot on the same location. But if the work is uneven, why is it that we don't at least mention the worthy parts of this section of Jancsó's work?.... KinoEye

FYI: Miklós Jancsó wasnt Jewish.

Miklós Jancsó - Nekem lámpást adott kezembe az Úr, Pesten aka Lord's Lantern in Budapest (1999)

http://img3.immage.de/281081lampast.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Quote:

Miklos Jancso is possibly the most famous and most highly regarded Hungarian director of all time. His reputation rests on a body of work which makes high intellectual demands of its audience and provokes awkward questions without trying to answer them.

After a long period in the doldrums, Miklos Jancso has re-emerged with Nekem lampast adott kezembe az Ur Pesten (The Lord's Lantern in Budapest, 1998), a blackly humorous look at the post-1989 culture of violence that won him the Gene Moskovitz prize from international critics at the Hungarian Film Week in Budapest earlier this year.

The reception was a mixed one, however, with the Hungarian pre-selection judges for the festival eliminating the film from the competition whilst pushing through what could charitably called masterpieces of the Hungarian new wave of unintented kitsch. They cannot be totally blamed, however. Nekem lampast is almost impenetrably dense in its richness and lacks a plot in any meaningful sense of the term. To understand why it is a masterpiece, the film must be seen in the context of Jancso's career. (Review by Andrew J Horton)

Miklós Jancsó & István Márton - Anyád! A szúnyogok (2000)

Quote:

This is the greatest production from Jancso Miklos. Same actors, and likely the same storyline as "nekem lampast adott az ur,pesten", but its really the best movie what i had ever seen. It's doesn't include any computer graphic, or expensive and famous artist, but Jancso's absurdity makes this movie one of the best hungarian movie ever.

The story is so simple : Child of Kapa appears, and wants the grandfather's fake money. After Kapa gets into the invisible wall, he kills his son, and doesn't feel any sorrow, but he blinds.

Jancso compresses all of his experience into his masterpiece.

This is a very good satire of the snobism of the new world`s men believing in the american dream, where competition is all and to be number one rules! Highly recommended to all who think the same and I`d suggest you should think on the words of the two protagonists meeting the director on the hip near the so-called Niagara! Spicey!

Miklós Jancsó & István Márton - Kelj fel, komám, ne aludjál aka Wake Up Mate, Don't You Sleep (2002)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v712/buttzilla/Plakat03_08.jpg

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5333/imdbimage.jpg

Quote:

"Although directed solely by Mikl?s Jancs?, the film Kelj fel, kom?m, ne aludj?l (Wake up, Mate, Don't You Sleep, 2002) is billed as a film ?by Mikl?s Jancs?, Ferenc Grunwalsky and Gyula Hern?di?, the latter collaborator being Jancs?'s near-constant scriptwriter for over 40-odd years, as well as a respected novelist in his own right. The joint credit is a testament to the degree to which Jancs?'s views filmmaking as a collective process, an ironic under-cutting of his status as an ?auteur?.
Kelj fel is the fourth film in a series made by the trio and the fourth to star P?ter Scherer and Zolt?n Mucsi as Pepe and Kapo respectively. In the original film, they were a pair of clueless gravediggers who try (and fail) to make sense of Budapest's post-Communist socio-cultural landscape (which they seem to live in rather than the city itself). In the new film, made as an indirect response to rising right-wing nationalism in Hungary, the pair are reincarnated as a pair of Second World War Jewish prisoners who again inhabit a modern-day abstract sphere, this time that of Budapest's contemporary socio-historical awareness.
The film also has a significant role for Andr?s Lovasi, lead singer and guitarist for the band Kisp?l ?s a Borz. Lovasi extends the role played by folk singer Tam?s Cseh in the director's historical films of the 1970s by providing musical interludes to the action, which Jancs? has compared to the role of the minstrel in the work of Shakespeare and strongly recommends those who watch the film to pay attention to the lyrics. Additional music from Hungary's top rock troublemakers B?lga and Burzo? Nyugd?jasok (literally ?the unemployed pensioners?) add to the post-modernist melange of social comment and irreverent fun. It's an unnervingly fresh and anarchic film to watch when you consider the director is now in his 80s."
