Walter Hugo Khouri - Noite Vazia aka Eros the Bizarre (1964)

A wealthy young man and a poor street lad cruise the streets of San Paulo looking for prostitutes in this erotic drama. Luis (Mario Benvenuti) and Nelson (Gabrielle Tinti) take Mara (Norma Bengeli) and Christina (Odete Lara) back to a luxury apartment. They watch X-rated films, have sex, and try to talk the women into a lesbian liaison. Christine is the hard-as-nails hooker who has long ago suspended any feelings, but the younger Mara still enjoys her encounter with the man and remains hopeful that someday she will find true love. Both men are left as emotionally empty as when they started their search for sex.

Jose Padilha - Tropa de Elite aka Elite Squad (2007)

PLOT SYNOPSIS

The movie, set in 1997, depicts the story of Captain Nascimento, a BOPE captain, who with the imminent birth of his first child, is determined to leave the battalion and find a safer position for the sake of his family, but first he must find a suitable replacement for him. At the same time, the movie focuses on two childhood friends, Matias and Neto, who become cadets in the military police, but become dismayed at the corruption surrounding them. Eventually, both Nascimento and the cadets' paths intersect, when the captain hopes that one of the two may become the substitute he is eager to find, as both decide to join the BOPE.

Tropa de Elite became one of the most popular Brazilian movies in history. According to DataFolha, 77% of São Paulo residents knew about the movie. The word of mouth was also extremely good with 80% of the people rating the movie as excellent or good according to the same company.[3]. The movie was released in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo on October 5, 2007, with a nationwide release on October 12, 2007. Up to now 2.5 million people have seen it at the theaters.[4]. In Rio and São Paulo, with no promotion other than billboards, 180,000 people saw the movie during its opening weekend.[3] [5]

The movie was also the cover for three of Brazil's most important weekly magazines, Veja, Carta Capital and Época.

On 16 February 2008 the movie was awarded with the best movie award of the Berlin International Film Festival, the Golden Bear.

SYNOPSIS

Walter Salles (CENTRAL STATION) and Daniela Thomas co-directed this crime drama about expatriate Brazilians who get mixed up in the Lisbon underworld. Paco (Pinto), a young Brazilian looking for a way to get to Spain, is offered a job as a courier to Lisbon by Igor, a black market dealer who assures him that when he gets to Lisbon he'll be given enough money to get there by his contact, Miguel. Meanwhile, Miguel's girlfriend, Alex, begins searching for a way back to her native Brazil, to no avail. Unfortunately, when Paco gets to Lisbon, Miguel is dead, the package he was supposed to deliver is stolen, and he finds himself on the run from his employers. Looking for anything to help him figure out what has happened, he runs into Alex, and both of them decide to try to get back to Brazil before they are caught by Igor and his gang.

Mario Peixoto - Limite (1931)

Sometimes cited as the greatest of all Brazilian films, this 120 minutes silent experimental feature by novelist Mario Peixoto, who never completed another film, was seen by Orson Welles and won the admiration of everyone from Sergei Eisenstein to Walter Salles. But its status as a poetic narrative about a man and two women lost at sea in a rowboat, whose pasts are conveyed in flashbacks has kept it in the margins of most film histories, where its been known mainly as a provocative and legendary cult item. For Peixoto, the experience offered by Limite cannot be adequately captured by language, but was made to be felt. Therefore, the spectator should subjugate himself to the images as to anguished cords of a synthetic and pure language of cinema.

Ze is an exceedingly poor man from the Brazilian backlands. His most prized possession is his donkey. When his donkey falls terminally ill, Ze makes a promise to God. If his donkey recovers, he will carry a cross-like Jesus-all the way from the backlands to the state capital. When the miracle happens, Ze leaves on his journey. He makes it to the church, but there is a problem. The priest refuses to accept the cross once he hears the reason for such sacrifice and in short time the peasant's mission is turned into a media circus, misinterpreted by everyone.
